Hemorrhoids In Children

Hemorrhoids, commonly referred to as piles, are usually thought of as a condition that occurs when you get older

. And while it is true that most often hemorrhoids occur between the ages of 45 - 65, they can happen at any age. As a matter of fact, hemorrhoids can develop in children as well.

Hemorrhoids are known to be a hereditary condition. If a parent has hemorrhoids, then it is very likely that a child will get them too eventually.

Hemorrhoids in children can oftentimes be indicative of other disorders. Therefore it is very important that parents have their children seen by a pediatrician to make rule out any other potential problems or disorders.

When a child has hemorrhoids, the symptoms are the same as with an adult. Symptoms may include itching, burning, and pain in and around the lower rectum and anus. Also, bright red blood may be present on the stool, in the toilet, or on the toilet paper after a bowel movement.

The most common cause of hemorrhoids is constipation. When a child is constipated, he or she will have to strain excessively to try and push out hardened stool. This pressure causes the veins in the rectum and anus to become swollen and irritated thus developing hemorrhoids. Constipation oftentimes occurs due to a poor diet that is high in fat and low in fiber and fluids. Eating a high fiber diet, eating a lot of fruits and vegetables and drinking plenty of water can often remedy repeated constipation and produce healthier stools.

The symptoms associated from hemorrhoids are the same for both children and adults. There are many over the counter products that can help with hemorrhoid pain, but when it comes to children, all natural remedies are best. Warm baths taken several times daily, as well as cool compresses on the affected area can provide relief for children suffering from painful hemorrhoid symptoms. Also, it is extremely important to keep the affected area dry and clean.

Hemorrhoids are painful condition. They should not be ignored nor taken lightly. If your child shows symptoms of hemorrhoids, take him or her in to see their doctor before the symptoms worsen or become more serious.
