Heredity Linked To Depression Among Women

Depression is very common among women according to clinical studies

. Biology and society make women more vulnerable to mood disorders according to the Harvard Medical School website. However, a separate study states that older first-time moms are not at higher risk for depression.

Depression is suffered mostly by women all over the world as stated by the Harvard Medical School website. The website also mentioned that heredity may account for up to 50 percent of the risk for major depression and could explain some of the gender difference.

Base on a survey conducted among 30,000 people in 30 countries which has found that in similar circumstances, women are more likely than men to say they are under stress. A separate study conducted says that women are three times more likely than men to become depressed in response to a stressful event. The Harvard Medical School website mentions about women being the subject to certain kinds of severe stress especially child abuse, adult sexual assaults, and domestic violence.

According to the HelpGuide website, the symptoms of depression in women are the same as those for major depression such as depressed mood, loss interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy. Feelings of guilt, hopelessness and worthlessness, suicidal thoughts or recurrent thoughts of death, sleep disturbance, appetite and weigh losses, difficulty concentrating and lack of energy and fatigue.

Depression is usually prescribed with antidepressant medication such as Zoloft, an antidepressant drug, classified under selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

The SSRIs is the common prescribed antidepressants. They can ease symptoms of moderate to severe depression, are relatively safe and generally cause fewer side effects that other types of antidepressants.

Zoloft birth defects, is among the causes of SSRIs which several patients has expressed intent of filing a Zoloft lawsuit.
