Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, India
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), also known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. The origin of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway dates back to the early 19th century and is linked to the very birthplace of the Darjeeling region. The railway was laid to connect Darjeeling with Siliguri in order to provide logistical support for the upcoming tea industry. What is really amazing about this little railroad is that it climbs grades over 5%, makes turns as tight as a 50 foot radius, loops over itself in a number of places and uses a number of Z sections to traverse the most difficult terrain ever seen. The serpentine track employed an endless series of switchbacks, loops, hairpin turns, tunnels, and bridges to gain serious altitude at a sustainable grade. The 88 km trip to New Jalpaiguri Station takes over six hours of chugging but theres never a dull moment in this journey as the trail abounds with breathtaking sceneries. The DHR secured "World Heritage Status" in 1999 and represents the engineering skills of the highest order.

The Ghan, Australia
The legendary desert train, The Ghan was named after the Afghan cameleers who traversed the route long before the train line was built from Adelaide to the Red Centre in the late 19th century. The original tracks proved unsuitable, laid in areas prone to flash flooding and devastation by termite. In the 1980s, standard-gauge lines were laid and, in 2004, the line was finally extended all the way to Darwin. The Ghan now travels 2,979 kilometers from Adelaide to Darwin on this transcontinental journey through the Red Centre of Australia. Over a kilometer in length; the train comprises two locomotives and 43 carriages, earning it a place in the history books as the longest passenger train in Australia. Its private sleeper cabins and elegant dining carriages are evocative of a bygone era in travel and the rail pace (typically travels at 85km/h) is idyllic for watching South Australias rolling green hills making way for desert and incredible rock formations.
