Companionship between human beings and animals is something which is not new

Amongst the unusual list of pets, are the unique and colorful creatures, known as the hermit crabs and these are increasingly becoming popular as pet options. These crabs belong to the family of crustaceans. In contrast to the normal crabs, hermit crabs have a vulnerable and soft abdomen.

As a protective measure, they live in abandoned marine animal shells and due to these unique characteristics, it is beneficial to provide a more natural environment for a hermit crab pet, which does not need a fancy dwelling, all that is needed is to make sure of all the essential things required to keep it healthy. There are five hundred different species of hermit crabs. Some of them are terrestrial and some aquatic.

Terrestrial crabs are predominantly found in the tropics and the aquatic crabs live in shallow waters. It is found that under proper hermit crab habitat conditions these crabs can live for even up to thirty years as pets. There are a few aspects to be considered in creating hermit crabs habitats

* Hermit crabs can be a very adventurous creature and indulge in a lot of climbing and moving around. Crowding should always be avoided and should provide enough room for the crab to move.

* The type of habitat can be chosen from the range of hermit crab cages sold in the pet stores, whatever type you choose to purchase, the area of the container needs to be spacious for the number of hermit crabs you wish to keep.

* Ideally a ten gallon aquarium tank is enough for two medium sized crabs.

* The lid of the enclosure should be tightly sealed as these creatures can make their adventurous escapes.

* Considerations to temperature and humidity regulations should be given. It is always required to maintain a warm temperature in the enclosure. The proper temperature for a habitat is nothing less than 72 degrees and humidity level of 70 percent.

* Substrate is another part of the habitat that must be given attention to, some of the most appropriate choices for substrate for a habitat include sands, fine gravel made for hermit crabs, and coconut fibers.
