birthday! This is all well and good, but let's face it, you are probably the poor soul who is going to be caring for it if we are being totally honest here! So where to start! There are various different species of hermit crab, however; the ones that you will find in most pet stores up and down the land are what are known as land based or terrestrial crabs. This type of crab comes from the Coenobitidae family. They begin their life in the ocean and live mostly out of water, although they do like to take a dip from time to time. Their natural habitat is the warm waters of the southern states and the Caribbean, although they can be found as far afield as Australia and Ecuador. They are used to warmer temperatures and reasonably high humidity so aim to keep them at around 72oF with the humidity at around 70%. If you plan to keep your crab tank in a cool room then you will need to buy a tank heater. These can be purchased from reputable pet stores and are not particularly expensive. In terms of tanks and cages, people have found that glass aquariums work best as they tend to retain the high humidity that the crabs need to survive.

Another piece of useful hermit crabs information is that they love to burrow and is really important when they are moulting. So you will need to purchase substrate. Substrate is a floor covering that is usually sand or gravel. Spread it to 2 or 3 inches in depth and the little critters will be as happy as a pig in clover.

Unusually, unlike the name, hermit crabs are happiest when in groups. They are not solitary figures and don't do well on their own, so consider buying at least 2.

In terms of size, they can grow to the size of a baseball and can live up to 15 years of age. They are relatively simple to feed, and you can buy special crab food pellets from any reputable pet store. However recent studies have shown that they also thrive well on small pieces of fresh fruit and vegetable as well as small pieces of meat and fish. They need carotene in their diet so colourful vegetables such as carrot and corn are perfect for them.

Armed with all of this hermit crabs information, you will be all set up and ready to go. Hermit crabs really do not need a lot of maintaining. They are very clean creatures and are perfect pets for people with limited space and time on their hands. As a rough guide, you are probably looking at a gallon of space for each pair of hermit crabs. If you can provide areas for them to climb, then you can add more pairs if you so wish.
