Heroine Hindi Movie Review - Kareena Kapoor In Heroine

UTV Motion Pictures and Bhandarkar Production's Heroine was released on 21st September 2012 i.e on Kareena's birthday

. Besides, Kareena Kapoor in the lead role Heroine star cast includes Arjun Rampal, Shahana Goswami, Divya Dutta and Randeep Hooda.

Week Before Heroines release it was established that it is by far Kareenas best performance. And were glad that it wasnt just a bubble that usually burst with the release and Kareena has indeed put her best foot forward.

But does that make Heroine Kareenas Dirty Picture? Does Madhur Bhandarkar, known for making hard-hitting realistic cinema manage to touch hearts yet again? Disappointingly, the answer is No.

Compared to Bhandarkars earlier creations like Page 3 and Fashion, Heroine is all gloss no grandeur. The film lacks novelty and theres a lingering feeling that you have seen it all before.

Why? Because we had seen last years The Dirty Picture that reflected upon actors boozed and fagged lifestyles and this years Raaz 3 that highlighted an insecure actress' ramblings in an industry where fate changes every Friday. Bhandarkar fails to kiss depth and ends up giving a shallow account of an actress life that goes keeps going back and forth between zero and hundred.

Problem with Bhandarkars script is that it has no structure and the director he has tried to rope in every possible stereotype to show the bad world of Bollywood gossip-churning Page 3 parties, cat-fights, filmy clans, insecure stars ready to stab at the back, mean journalists, bitchy star wife who decides her hubbys co-actresses, a Khan who can chop off anyones role, actresses buying IPL teams, Bengali throwing director Dada, commercial cinema vs parallel cinema angle, even the ugly MMS scandal finds a place in the film.

The director gives you many real life references to play the guessing game. Result? A mess of a narrative thats predictable and doesnt let any character bloom the way it could have.

Not just that, the starry funeral scene and the mandatory presence of a gay designer takes you back to Bhandarkars own earlier creations. Then what's new? Only the Black-Swan like lesbian act is a surprise element filmed aesthetically but was it needed? No. It could have moved the plot but remains irrelevant.

Our protagonist Mahi Arora (Kareena Kapoor), is the product of a troubled childhood, hence she is shown to have a bipolar disorder. She thrives on alcohol and cigarettes and is a victim of men. No, she doesnt sleep with just everybody. But lack of love and depleting stardom in her life has turned her into a maniac. She has a moth and flame relationship with her man (Arjun Rampal). He dumps her. Just when her life is in deep shit, she puts her PR machinery to work and bounces back not just in the game but gets herself another man, this time cricketer Angad Paul (Randeep Hooda). But her desperate attempts to clinch stardom and love leave her in a deeper shit. And we feel exactly same about the movie what Randeep feels about Mahie when he says, I cant take it anymore.

A film that talks about the rise and fall of an actress, Heroine looks half-cooked as the audiences are not made a part of Heroines struggle to the top. You dont empathize with her failure because at the onset the director has declared that she is unstable and impulsive. The character remains weak till the end and Kareenas potential remains untapped.

Kareena has done a great job. She has not only looked gorgeous but has performed really well, especially in the emotional scenes in her no make-up look. She brings meaning to the character of an unstable fading star. However, a haggard narrative that takes you nowhere limits her performance. Surprisingly, every time she plays the Heroine she spoils it all with they made-up performance. Is is so tough to play ones ownself? We wonder!

Talking about performances, Randeep Hooda not only looks genuine but even acts genuine in his own casual style. Arjun Rampal as a confused star makes his presence felt in whatever steamy screen space he gets. Divya Dutta as a shrewd PR person in good.

Musically, Heroine doesnt have much to offer. However, Sayyian comes in the right time adding value to the emotional scene. Even the dialogue are clichd and most of the punches are already out in the trailer.

All in all, Bhandarkar didnt do his basic homework well and despite having a remarkable star like Kareena Kapoor , the film looks clichd. A must-watch only for Kareena as she is the one who carries the film on her sexy shoulders making it watchable.
