Recommended Fluoride Levels in Water Revised Down.

The US Health and Human Services Department together with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have announced a downwards revision in the recommended ratio of fluoride to water in fluoridating community water systems. The new recommendation, 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water, replaces the previous recommended range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter. The new levels are being recommended to prevent tooth decay and to avoid excessive exposure.

For the past 65 years, community water fluoridation has taken place in the US because it is considered a safe and healthy way to effectively prevent tooth decay. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, has recognized water fluoridation as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.

However, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), excessive intake of fluoride is known to cause dental fluorosis, a condition that affect the enamel of the tooth surface, in children 8 years and younger. In its mildest form, fluorosis appears as barely noticeable white spots on children's teeth. Severe cases may result in staining and pitting in the enamel. CDC provides extensive details on this condition.

According to AAPD, dental fluorosis only occurs when teeth are developing under the gums. It does not occur in older children or in adults. Younger children can become exposed to too much fluoride in a number of ways including swallowing fluoridated toothpaste and from fluoride supplements. Taking fluoride supplements may lead to excessive exposure when drinking water already contains optimum levels of fluoride due to water fluoridation.

Treating fluoriosis falls into the area of cosmetic dentistry. If your child is suffering from severe enamel fluorosis, you should consult your pediatric dentist to find out more about dental techniques that can provide a remedy to enhance the child's self confidence and his or her smile. If you don't have a pediatric, or children's dentist, you can find a dentist here.
