Hidden Cameras - Should You Use One?

Ask your self this, "Do I have a legitimate excuse to use a hidden camera

?" If the answer is yes then by all means buy a hidden camera or spy camera. A legitimate reason is that you suspect your child's babysitter is behaving inappropriately. Have you been coming out in the morning and finding your car all messed up? Is somebody stealing from you at the office. These are all legitimate reasons for using a hidden camera.

Sometimes people buy hidden cameras or spy cameras for reasons that are not on the up and up. Too often we read in the newspaper about some landlord or neighbor using a hidden camera to spy on a female neighbor. Or placing it in a common area of an apartment building such as the laundry room. Disgusting! When these jerks are caught they usually do a good amount of jail time, as they should.

One way to make sure you are not a victim of a hidden camera or microphone is to purchase and use a signal detector. They are more commonly known as "Bug Detectors". We have all seen these being used on TV and in the movies. You simply turn the hand held unit on and walk through the room or "sweep" the room. The signal detector picks up the signal transmitted by the hidden camera or microphone and helps you locate its exact position.

"Boy, that was so nice of the landlord to leave that nice wall clock in my bedroom. He is such a nice guy." Well, think again. When you do a sweep of your apartment don't be surprised if your bug detector activates when you get close to that wall clock! These days anything you see could be housing a hidden camera. Make sure you do a complete sweep of your apartment. Remember, if you find something, try not to react. Simply leave your apartment and call the police from outside. You don't want your landlord to know that you have just called the cops.

If you do want a hidden camera for a good reason, there are many types to choose from. Most hidden cameras are built into everyday items you find around a home such as clocks, radios, thermostats, smoke detectors, lamps, etc. You name it and it could contain a hidden camera.

When deciding what kind of hidden camera you want, make sure it will fit into the decor of the room. As an example, I don't think I would put a nice bright neon lit clock in my contemporary living room. But, it would probably fit in nicely in my game room.

You are going to have to make some other decisions too. What type do you want? Do you want an all-in-one hidden camera? How about a wired one or do you prefer wireless.

If you choose the wireless option the hidden camera and a tiny transmitter will be placed inside the unit. The transmitter will send a signal through the air. You then have to have a receiver to pick up that signal. You can then connect the receiver to your TV, monitor or recording device.

If you don't mind A/V cords coming out of the device you might choose a wired hidden camera. The A/V cord gets plugged in to your monitor or TV or to a recording unit.

You want an "All-In-One unit? They are readily available. These little guys consist of a small camera AND a recording unit. They record right onto an SD card! It does not get any easier than this. You take the SD card from the unit, plop it into your computer and you can instantly see what the camera has recorded.

There are many options available when purchasing a hidden camera: black & white or color, low light capability, motion sensing, date & time stamp, etc. You will be able to find the camera that fits your needs and your budget.

The bottom line is that no matter what style or type of hidden camera you purchase, make sure you are purchasing it for a legitimate, ethical reason and use it properly.
