Prescription eye wear are some of the best options for people with certain vision problems. However, these eye wear are conventionally made from glass lenses and the result is the lenses become heavier and thicker as prescription gets stronger. This is also many people who use glass lenses are always bored and bothered. Fortunately, there are now some special lenses that are made from special plastic, called high index plastic.

The reason why glass lenses become thicker on and on as prescription increase is very simple- light must be bent in much greater angle. But lenses made from high index plastic can do much better job, though they are thin. Therefore, many thick glass lenses can be replaced by lightweight thin high index plastic lenses.

Conventional glass lenses can be very thick at different part of the lenses, depending on the problems to be treated. This is because glass has much small refractive index and the thickness increases as prescription becomes stronger. As its name suggests, high index plastic lenses have much greater refractive index and can work the same as those thick glass lenses, though they are very thin. However, eyeglasses made from this material are very expensive.

And now, high index lenses can be used to treat more vision errors and made into eye wear of more forms. For example, eyeglasses made from these lenses can now be used to correct astigmatism; they can also be designed in the form of bifocal or trifocal eye wear. These lenses have brought a lot of benefits and convenience to wearers in today's society.

However, people should consult with their eye doctor carefully while buying these lenses. This is because different people should use the one that fits their personal condition most.
