High school class reunions can be a source of excitement and trepidation

. Almost everyone has been through high school; its nearly as common a life experience as marriage, parenting, and even birth and death. In some ways, high school is even more memorable than those other events because teens feel such heightened emotions and fears. Attending a high school class reunion may revive intense memories.

The stakes can be highest at a tenth anniversary reunion. Only ten years out, former classmates have completed their first decade of career achievements and living as a legally responsible adult. No wonder so many fear their professional path, physical shape and health, and basic maturity might fail to measure up against the achievements of their former classmates.

Hollywood has found high school class reunions provide rich fodder for movies. Romy and Micheles High School Reunion, a 1997 comedy hit, depicts a pair of friends who regard their 10-year reunion in Tucson, Arizona, with concern. They dress in suits and concoct a tale about being the inventors of Post-It notes. In Class Reunion, the 1982 film written and directed by John Hughes, a tenth reunion becomes the setting for a slasher movie spoof. Alumni of the Lizzie Borden High School class of 1972 have to identify a psychotic killer among them who is killing former classmates in revenge for a prank they played on him in school.

Grosse Pointe Blank, a 1997 action comedy that stars John Cusack, plays off the anxiety people feel about discussing their career path after high school graduation. Cusacks character returns to his upscale Michigan hometown to attend his tenth high school reunion, but his work as a professional hit man is not a fit topic for discussion, especially with his old girlfriend.

Another clich of high school reunions is encountering an old flame who turns out to be just the same, or not half as appealing any more; or a person you worshiped from afar who turns out to have admired you secretly, too. Year after year, enough real-life experiences occur to keep this notion alive. Some people actually marry an old high school boyfriend or girlfriend, or a longtime acquaintance, after losing a spouse to death or divorce.

Volunteer organizers of high school class reunions have found the Internet an invaluable tool in an age when Americans have become so widely dispersed. Reunion.com, Classmates.com, and Switchboard.com are just three of the sites that make locating alumni an easier task. Many websites, such as ReunionPlanner.com, MyEvent.com, AlumniClass.com, and CreativeReunions.com, provide a tool for setting up the events and running order for a reunion.
