Highest Grossing Box Office Movies
As we go through our day to day happenings, we tend to keep up on what is going on at the theaters and what movies we may want to go see this weekend
. But what exactly are the highest grossing movies on the lists? Do we see patterns emerge? We will take a quick look at what we found out.
According to an All Time Worldwide Box Office List, here is your top ten:
Avatar
Titanic
Marvels The Avengers
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest
Toy Story 3
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Star Wars: Episode 1-The Phantom Menace
This list gives the U.S. dollars and the overseas dollars. Of course, the overseas money is going to double or triple our revenue, we are only one country. But for being just one small piece of the entertainment pie, we hold our own very well. I was, however, surprised to see that Avatar has been able to hold that number one spot. With such an assortment of movies below it, what sort of show is it going to take to dethrone the masterpiece?
Looking at the studios that produced these movies, Buena Vista holds a handful of them. The only other studio who had more than one up there was Fox. And they hold the number one slot. I went into this thinking one large entity would monopolize the list, but not really. The talent was pretty spread out. Kudos to BV for their ability to make great high dollar movies that people love.
I also tried to find a pattern. Any pattern. The most that I uncovered was that a lot of those movies are parts of a series. Obviously, we love to get hooked on a story and see it continue all the way to the end. Even The Avengers was a part of a story, kind of bringing several stories together with all the characters you were already familiar with into another movie. So eight out of ten were sequels or parts.
What about genre? We have three Sci-Fi, four Fantasy, one historic, one Animated, and one Superhero. The leader of the pack falls into the Sci-Fi category. Does this mean that we as people are partial to science fiction? Not necessarily, but with a movie like Avatar, it means that many people went to see it multiple times because it gave people hope of a better way of life. It was a two hour vacation, euphoric. It also shows that people love many different kinds of movies, not just one kind. The list is a great mix, not dominated by just one genre.
What I also found interesting was the fact that there were so few part one shows on the list where sequels were concerned. So could it be that we saw the first one and waited patiently for the next, and when it came out we went more than once? Every time we went out with our kids and then on a date with our spouse and then went again with friends...we boosted that sequel higher on the list even though we loved the first part just as much. Perhaps it is the love of the series that also shows the fans impatience for the next installment.
Regardless of reasons why, Fox has the corner on the number one movie of all time. A movie that many people have reported seeing multiple times because they love the thoughts behind it and the message it gives to us. Maybe the message of hope is what we crave.
