Historically Speaking

Lansdowne owes its existence to the British who established a Garhwal Rifles cantonment here during the Raj era. They named this hill-station cantonment in honour of the Earl of Lansdowne, Sir Petty-Fitzmaurice, the Viceroy of India (1888-1894).The town is well developed thanks to the cantonment,

yet it is charmingly unspoiled and tranquil.

Shopping opportunities in Lansdowne are almost nil! Lansdowne has managed to retain its charm and serenity, and you wont find much of the commercial activities that often are the downfall of natural beauties like Lansdowne. As far as entertainment and nightlife is concerned again, no movie

halls or video parlours here. Curl up in front of a bonfire at your hotel and enjoy the serenity and starlit skies!

Events

In autumn, the Annual Shardotsav is celebrated with grand fervor. Jwalpa Devi is another place which attracts a lot of tourists for pilgrimage, especially during Ashtami (in the months of April and October).

Night Out

No fancy restaurants here, but meander down the main market and you will find many small restaurants that offer a variety of cuisines. Two well frequented eating places are the Hotel Zayaka for its Momos and Hotel Mayur is well known for its paranthas - so go ahead try them!

Activities

A number of treks into the hillside are launched from Lansdowne, which is a popular base camp. The nature treks in this hill station range from simple hiking trails of a few hours or one days duration, to tougher climbs lasting a couple of days. Garhwal Tourism will organize these treks for you.

Sights

The War memorial at Lansdowne was unveiled on 11 Nov 1923 by his Excellency Lord Rawlinson of Trent, who was at the time Commander in Chief of India. Located at the Parade Ground the memorial is a major attraction for tourists. The Garhwali Mess , built in Jan 1888 is one of

the oldest buildings in Lansdowne and gives a great peek into the heritage of the time. It has been very well maintained and a must to visit. Tip-in-Top is on the ridge close to St. Marys Church. The glorious view of the Himalayas from this point is amazing. An ideal place to trek to and be rewarded by the unforgettable view.
