Hints and Tips for Handy Head Lice Oil
If you're not a fan of the pesticide based treatments available at your pharmacy
, then you should look at alternative remedies and treatments to tackle your head lice problem. There are lots of different head lice oil products that you can make yourself at home. These oil-based alternatives are far less likely to cause an allergic reaction with your child's scalp, and can be just as effective as over the counter products.
Some of these alternative treatments are very easy to make at home, and can be used as a number of ways.
Essential and Carrier Oils
The best essential oils to use as home remedies for infestations are tea tree and eucalyptus oil. Both are renowned for their natural antiseptic qualities, and many parents believe they are very effective at removing and preventing unwanted parasitic infestations. These essential oils are relatively cheap, and can be purchased from a number of stores.
Carrier oils are useful for the smothering technique. There are a number of these you could use for this technique, including sweet almond, olive, baby and coconut oil.
Mix a few drops of the essential and carrier oils of your choice.
Apply the home made mixture to dry hair. Be liberal, and make sure the hair is thoroughly covered.
Cover the hair soaked in the mixture with a shower cap, and use a protective cover to protect the pillowcase.
Leave the mixture to work overnight.
Rinse the hair with warm water in the morning. When you have removed most of the home made mixture, apply white vinegar to the hair. Leave to soak for 10 15 minutes. The white vinegar will help you to remove the nits (insect eggs).
Rinse the hair again using warm water.
Towel dry the hair, and place the towel straight into the washing machine.
Use a proper nit comb to remove any remaining insects. You should find that the eggs can also be removed from the hair shaft a little easier.
Head Lice Oil as a Preventative Treatment
Essential oil can also be used with other substances. Mixed in your normal shampoo, you can get a better shampoo that helps prevent future parasitic infestations. Remember that you should always use the trusty nit comb after you wash the hair. Mixed with warm water, you can also get a good home made liquid to help prevent infestations. Place the home made mixture into a spray bottle, and spray on either wet or dry hair, to help prevent the unwanted parasites from retuning.
Although these kinds of home-made treatments or products are yet to be approved by health regulatory bodies, many parents choose to use essential oils as part of their regular treatments for infestations.
Remember, you must also treat the home, as well as the family. Failure to do so will lead to another infestation, no matter what treatments you use on the host, or the frequency of the treatments. You must also ensure that your children are informed about infestations, and that they are aware of the activities they need to avoid to prevent any future infestations or past outbreaks from coming back to your home.
You don't always have to depend on the over the counter chemical products. Sometimes you can benefit from a little research and some home brewed solutions that won't break the bank and won't expose you or your family to pesticides and other dangerous chemicals.
