Hip Prosthesis-blessing In The Medical World

Hip joints are the most moveable joints of the human body

. As these joints are highly stressed joints, they are subject to wear and tear leading to pain and joint stiffness. Today, 25% of the population of the world is suffering from degenerative joint disease called osteoporosis. When conservative treatment or surgery fails to alleviate pain, then the damaged joint is replaced with an artificial joint. Total joint replacement or TJR is a surgical technique of replacing knee and hip joints using artificial materials. This process is known as endoprosthesis. Hip Prosthesis is one of the most common surgical procedures in orthopedic surgery that involves several prosthetic implants or orthopaedic implants to replace damaged or deteriorated joints. These implants are made of high molecular weight polyethylene and are are lined with plastic so as to act as artificial cartilages. There are various types of orthopaedic implants for the hip, knee, shoulder and elbow. Some of the widely used orthopaedic implants are interlocking nails, wires & pins, cranio maxillofacial implants, external fixators and angled blade plates. Some orthopaedic implants that are incorporated into bones are sterilized in polyethylene. However, each orthopaedic implant is designed to correct the affected joint and to withstand the associated movement and stress. The process of implanting orthopaedic implants is subject to surgery complications like bleeding, post-operative infection, inflammation, and pain.

External Fixators

There are some orthopaedic implants that allow the bone to grow into the implant. These devices are called External Fixators and are mainly used to reconstruct or to lengthen the limb. External Fixators are more preferred by orthopaedic specialists worldwide as they are less invasive and more capable of fixing weak tissue areas. They are useful for treatment of bone fractures. Another orthopaedic implant that helps in the healing of broken and fractured bones is the bone plate. It is surgically implanted to hold the fractured bone accurately. As bone plates are made of metal and steel they are strong enough to take up the load of the body. Besides being strong, they are stiff, non toxic and corrosion free. There are many kinds of bone plates like cobra head plates, McLaughlin plates, reconstruction plates, sherman bone plates and spoon plates. Condylar plates are generally applied to fractures occurring to facial areas like nose, jaw and eye sockets while cloverleaf plates are used for repositioning osteotomies in the treatment of femoral neck pseudarthroses and fractures. As all these Orthopaedic Implants are designed in lines with medical standards, they are highly sterilized and are safe to use.
