A perfect way to use an independent or one van moving company is for a smaller more or for a local move. This type of move does not take as long as a move where you are moved to another state or country. A local mover may have smaller equipment and not charge as much as a larger, nation or international company. They may not have the same mileage rates or any mileage rates at all. They may offer you a flat rate move. Then if they have underestimated the amount of goods to be moved and the amount of time it will take, then they cannot charge you more for the move as you received a flat rate contract from them.
Conversely, if they have determined it will take them longer to move you and it takes them a shorter time, they you will have paid too much for the move. This is always the gamble you take when you accept a flat rate price for a move. This is true whether you are moving house or just moving some things to a storage container or storage shed.
One thing to always consider if you are on a budget is if you can move some of the items your self. You can rent a small truck or borrow one you can haul a lot of things over a period of time. There are some considerations here. If you have to haul things up a lot of steps you may be better off health wise to hire the man with the van. Let him take the wear and tear on the body as you are paying him for that. Also consider if you hire someone to move you are paying for a service to be performed and you would expect them to have enough people to perform the move, or the service, in a specified period of time.
If you are moving yourself then you may have to move your goods after work or on weekends. This may take a long period of time depending on how many friends you have who are willing to assist you. It is always amazing how good friends have other commitments when someone has to move a lot of things into a new place of residence.
Another reason to use an outside company to move you is they have the equipment to move your things in an efficient manner. They have the dollies, the ramps, blankets to wrap the appliances in so they dont get scuffed or banged. This also applies to a large TV or other electronic device.
So hire that man with his van when you feel you need him.
