Hiring A Piano Tuner VS A Piano Technician

When hiring someone to tune your piano, please try to keep in mind that if you hire a person that is just a piano tuner, you will be hiring someone that basically just tunes pianos, perhaps changes a piano string, and maybe does a few little repairs.

That is fine if, that is all you need. However, in my 20 years of professional experience, you would be much better off hiring a piano technician at least. Why? You may be asking. Well, there are several reasons:

1) A piano technician is fully qualified to service most, of if not all, of your piano needs.

2) He is able to give you a thorough piano inspection thus revealing its present condition.

3) He is able to inform you of potential problems that may occur in the near future.

4) You can deal with one person instead 2 or 3 to get the job done.

These are very good reasons why you should definitely hire a piano technician instead of just a piano tuner. Once again, keep in mind this only has to do with inner workings of your piano not the outside.

Now here is the rest of the story: if you need your piano to be refinished, call a wood refinishing company, if you need you piano moved, call a piano moving company, not, I repeat not, just any moving company. (Believe me, I could tell you stories that I have witnessed with my own eyes that would shock you, of people hiring moving companies with untrained workers to move their $35,000 heirloom piano and calling me to fix the problems they left behind.)
