Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is one of India's major cities situated on the country's west coast. Mumbai is also the capital of the state Maharashtra. Mumbai is mostly 10 meters above sea level and currently comprises seven islands, which were united through various land reclamation projects. Mumbai is considered as a major city from the British era. Mumbai is incredibly blessed with monuments, museums, gardens, parks, beaches, etc. These historic and valuables in Mumbai mixed with Art Deco and colonial architecture makes Mumbai a place to explore.

One of the major landmark in Mumbai is Gateway of India. It was opened in 1924. This has become a favoured gathering sport which attracts large crowd who comes here to enjoy the southern side of the city. It was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary for the Delhi Durban in 1911. Situated at the Apollo Bunder, the Gateway holds great historical significance as the last of the british troops that left India by sea marched from Gateway. This monument is completely with four turrets and intricate latticework carved into the yell0w basalt stone.

The majestic Taj Mahal Palace and Tower is an important landmark which was built more than 100 years ago, at the turn of 20th century which is equally impressive as the Gateway of India. It is considered as one of the city's most luxurious hotel more than 500 guest rooms. The grand central staircase is worth a look.

One of the landmark in Mumbai which was built at the very end of 19th century is Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMCB) which is known for its tall tower which is more than 76 meters i.e. 250 feet's in height. It features Gothic-style architecture with domed roofs each topped with a cross.

One of the city's most famous landmark is the Grand Rajabai Clock Tower built in 1870's is hard to miss. The tower is almost 91 meters / 300 feets in height and home to large library with four separate clock facing different side.

Located on the southern side of Malabar Hill, the Babulnath Mandir Temple built in the latter part of the 18th century attracts huge number of visitors who enjoys the architecture here.

The Asiatic Library (town hall) displays a series of impressive marble sculptures with an extensive collection of books.

Mani Bhawan residence of Mahatma Gandhi in Mumbai from where Gandhiji was arrested in 1932. This two storied building houses a reference library with over 2000 books- a feature on the Mahatma's life.


One of the best museums in the country The Prince of Wales was built in 1914. The museum has art, sculpture, rare coins, priceless collection of miniature paintings, etc.

Another historic garden built in early 1880's is Mumbai's main reservoir at the top of the Malabar hill. The garden provides lovely sunset views over the Arabian Sea.

Haji Ali built up in 1431 by a wealthy Muslim merchant and saint Haji Ali who was inspired to change the course of his life after going to Mecca contains his body. Situated in the middle of the ocean which can be visited only during the low tide Haji Ali Dargah features a magnificent marble courtyard, where one will find the central shrine. Haji Ali also holds a very important place in the Historic Mumbai tour.

The number of historic places in Mumbai's list is continuous. Mumbai is one of the world's most lively and important city in terms of historic landmarks and monuments. A visit to India without going to Mumbai is an incomplete visit to this country.
