The System of Academic Disciplines There are various academic disciplines one can choose

. Some of them are humanities, some of them are social sciences, others are formal ones, etc. The system of academic disciplines is very complicated, it is developing continuously. New academic disciplines emerge, while others are being divided into new ones. Some of academic disciplines are absolutely theoretical, for example, philosophy, religion, etc. But others combine theoretical and applied features of science. As a rule the majority of academic disciplines have numerous subbranches. Architecture as an Academic Discipline Architecture is an applied academic discipline. It goes along with such academic discipline as design and others. The word "architecture" may be attributed to different aspects: the theory of academic discipline, the design of buildings, applied discipline, etc. The system of academic discipline combines such subbranches as architecture itself, urban planning, interior design, landscape design, and historic preservation. Historic Preservation as a Subbranch of Architecture Another name of such academic discipline as historic preservation sounds as heritage conservation. This academic discipline studies the ways how to preserve historic landmarks and to restore old ones. Historic preservation has its own objects: building, landscape, artifact, etc. This academic discipline is closely connected with the profession in the field of historic reservation. Careers in the Field of Historic Preservation For some people it may sound rather awkward but one can be awarded with a Doctor or a Master degree, although the profession of historic preservers is still on the voluntary basis. But still, people who are interested in history, architecture and historic preservation may apply for such professions as architectural conservator, architectural historian, historic preservation planner, preservation architect, preservation engineer, public historian and resource interpreters, historic site administrator, preservation craftsperson, etc. As one may guess, there are three sectors of the profession: public sector, non-profit sector, and private sector.
