Historical information about the Lumen gentium in Rome

The mystery of the holy Church is manifest in its very foundation. The Lord Jesus, in fact, it began preaching the gospel, that is the coming of the kingdom of God for centuries promised in Scripture: "Surely the time has come, and next is the kingdom of God" (Mk 1:15; cf. Mt 4:17). This kingdom was clearly open to men in word, in work and in the presence of Christ. The word of the Lord is compared to a seed which is sown in the field (cf. Mk 4:14): those who listen to him with faith and belong to the little flock of Christ (cf. Lk 12:32), welcomed the kingdom itself of God, then the seed germinates and grows by its own power until the time of harvest (cf. Mk 4:26-29). Even the miracles of Jesus prove that the kingdom arrived on earth: "If by the finger of God I cast out demons, then you have already reached between the kingdom of God" (Lk 11:20, cf. Mt 12:28) . But first the kingdom is manifested in the very person of Christ, the Son of God and Son of Man, who came "to serve and give His life a ransom for many" (Mk 10:45). When Jesus, after having suffered death on the cross for men, resources, appeared as Lord and Messiah and eternal priest (cf. Acts 2:36, Hebrews 5.6, 7.17 to 21), and poured out on His disciples the Spirit promised by the Father (cf. Acts 2:33).

The Church, equipped with the gifts of her founder and faithfully observing his precepts of charity, humility and self-denial, receives the mission to proclaim and establish among all peoples the kingdom of Christ and of God, and that kingdom on earth seed and beginning. While it slowly grows, she longs for the Kingdom and, with all its strength, hopes and desires to be united in glory with its King.Images of the Church6. As mentioned in the Old Testament revelation of the kingdom is often given in figures, so also now the intimate nature of the Church and we do know through various images, drawn from both the agricultural and pastoral life, and by the construction of buildings or even from family and the nuptials, which are already outlined in the books of the prophets. The Church is a sheepfold, which brings unique and necessary is Christ (cf. Jn 10.1 to 10). It is also a flock of which God himself foretold that he would be the shepherd (see Is 40.11, 34.11 Ez ss), and whose sheep, although ruled by human shepherds, are continuously grazed and nourished by Christ Himself, the Good Shepherd and prince of shepherds (cf. Jn 10:11, 1 Peter 5:4), who gave his life for his sheep (cf. Jn 10.11-15).The Church is the farm or field of God (cf. 1 Cor 3:9). In that field the ancient olive tree grows whose holy roots were the patriarchs and in which it occurred and will be the reconciliation of Jews and Gentiles (cf. Rom 11.13-26). It was planted by the heavenly farmer like a choice vineyard (Mt 21:33-43 par. Cf. Is 5.1 ff). Christ is the true vine, who gives life and fruitfulness to the branches, that is, to us, and through the Church remain in Christ and without him we can do nothing (cf. Jn 15.1-5).Often the Church is called the building of God (cf. 1 Cor 3:9). The Lord Himself is likened to the stone which the builders rejected, but which has become the cornerstone (Matt. 21.42 par.).

On this foundation the Church is built by the Apostles (cf. 1 Cor 3:11) and it receives the stability and cohesion. This building is called in various ways: the house of God (cf. 1 Tim 3:15), that is where his family lives, the dwelling place of God in the Spirit (cf. Eph 2:19-22), God's dwelling with men (see Rev. 21:3), and above all a holy temple, which, represented by the shrines of stone, is the object of praise of the holy Fathers, and is rightly compared to the liturgy to the holy city, new Jerusalem [5]. In it, As living stones we here on this earth as a spiritual temple (cf. 1 Pt 2:5). And John contemplates this holy city, while, when you renew the world, descends from heaven from God, "adornatasi up like bride to her husband" (Rev 21:1 s).The Church, called "heavenly Jerusalem" and "our mother" (Gal 4.26, cf. Rv 12:17), is described as the spotless bride of the immaculate Lamb (cf. Rev 19.7, 21.2 and 9, 22.17), Bride that Christ "loved .. . and gave himself for it, in order to sanctify it "(Eph 5:26), which is associated with indissoluble bond and is unceasingly" nourishes and cherishes "(Eph 5:29), after having purified himself insisted on joint subject and in love and fidelity (cf. Eph 5:24), and, finally, forever filled with heavenly gifts, so we could know the love of God and Christ in us, a love that surpasses knowledge ( cf. Eph 3:19). But while the Church makes her pilgrim way on earth away from the Lord (cf. 2 Cor 5:6), is like an exile, and try and think on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God, where the life of Church is hidden with Christ in God, until in her husband appears in glory (cf. Col 3.1-4).
