History And Elegance Found In An Asscher Diamond Ring

All diamond rings have a flair for their elegance and beauty

. Few rings, though, match an Asscher diamond ring in prestige and desirability. Royalty and other elite people seek out this cut of diamond, which is renowned for its unique beauty and historical value.

Holland's Joseph Asscher started his I. J. Asscher company in 1854. His style of cutting, which came to bear his name, did not appear until 1902. Quickly, his unique cut took the gem market by storm and people from all over began to demand this cut of jewel. Asscher's company still calls Holland home, although branches are now located in New York and Tokyo. To indicate its affinity with royalty, the company changed its name to The Royal Asscher Diamond Company.

Until the beginning of World War II, the company became renowned among Europe's privileged class and enjoyed a place of honor and prestige among gem businesses. The war, however, witnessed the imprisonment of the entire family in concentration camps, dispersing them throughout central and Eastern Europe. Many of these family members did not survive the war.

World War II witnessed a temporary end to their gem cut. These items became a rarity as, with the entire family being imprisoned, their production ceased. No other gem cutter could replicate such a cut. By the war's end, only ten family members returned to Holland, only to find that their former company had been closed and taken apart by the Nazi invaders.

Determined to reignite their family's passion for jewels and to carry on their legacy, the surviving Asschers reopened the business in Holland. They quickly regained their former prestige and their cut diamonds once again began to make their mark on the world's diamond trade.

Their place of honor remains intact today in Holland and worldwide. The family's business is headed by fifth and sixth generation Asschers, who run not only the Holland office but also those in New York and Tokyo. The Dutch royal family also admires this company. The royal family's crown jewels were cut and styled by the company, allowing the business to install the world Royal to their title.

The Asscher cut features a square shape and perfect symmetry. Other diamond cutters and jewelers sometimes call all other square shaped diamonds by the family's name. However, their particular cut's style is unique in its specifications so much so that no other cutter has been able to replicate it. The Asschers cut of diamond is truly unique among the world's other diamonds.

The family does not readily offer its measurements for their style of cut. However, in looking at gems cut in this manner, one can tell that there are two variants of the cut. The original cut contains 58 facets. The royal cut possesses 74 facets. Both variants adhere to strict symmetrical standards, which allow the diamonds to have a deep luster and stunning beauty.

Every Asscher diamond ring combines history with beauty for a ring like no other. Possessing such a gem holds a certain prestige and honor among other diamond owners. Gem cutters throughout recent history have never been able to replicate this cut of diamond.
