Discover a chunk of the history of Buenos Aires. You will find landmarks of the Pern era all around.Of Italian extraction, Juan Domingo Pern was born in Lobos, Buenos Aires Province in 1895. At 16 he entered military school and progressed up the rankings, eventually to General. He married his first wife Aurelia Tizon in 1929. She died in 1938 of uterine cancer.Following the coup de Etat in 1943 Colonel Pern became minister of labour and later vice president in the new government. After the horrendous earthquake of 1944, he was given the job of raising funds to help the victims. He mounted a huge "thermometer" on the Buenos Aires Obelisk to record the incoming funds.El Obelisco de Buenos Aires in the Plaza de la Repblica was built in 1936 on the site of the first flag of Argentina hoisted there in 1812.It is a monument that has featured in many Buenos Aires events. This drive was extremely successful and he became well known and tasted popularity for the first time. He also got to meet a young actress called Eva Duarte. In 1945 his famous speech "from work to home and from home to work" won a huge response from the workers, but trod inevitably on too many status quo toes, and he landed in jail. However, he stayed there only five days, mass demonstrations were spurred on by Eva, now known by her adoring public as Evita'. This resulted in securing his release on October 17th which later became known as Loyalty Day'. Five days later he and Eva were married. In 1946 Pern began to serve his first term as President of Argentina. He set up his government in the Casa Rosada, the beautiful pink government house which you can see at the eastern end of the Plaza de Mayo.At the end of the first term of office, in 1952 his immensly popular wife Evita died of cervical cancer. She had been an inspiration to her husband in the field of social justice, and became the champion of the poor and downtrodden. In his first two terms Pern made huge changes in the economy, and was famed for his building of over 4 200 health care facilities, 1 000 kindergartens, and 8 000 schools. He also spurred on the building of more than 650 000 homes, the same development rate as the United States. In spite of the reforms, a growing rebellion against Pern and his iron fist' retaliation led to an attempted coup in the Plaza de Mayo in 1955 against Pern, which killed 364 people. Although the coup failed, resistance built up and Pern was exiled to Spain for 18 years. Even the mention of Juan or Eva Perns' names was banned. In the 1973 elections, Hector Campora was elected, and immediately recalled Pern from exile. 3.5 million Pern supporters welcomed him back at Buenos Aires Airport. However his enemies were many, and snipers fired on the crowd and killed at least 13 and injured more than 360. This is remembered as the Ezeiza massacre'.That same year new elections were held and Pern was elected president. His new wife Isabel was elected vice president. In 1974 he caught pneumonia which led to a series of heart attacks, the last one fatal. His wife Isabel succeeded him for two years as president, until a coup in 1976.On your tour to Buenos Aires, to findhoteis em buenos aires forcomfortable stay, visit http://www.buenosairesstay.com/
