The history of chiropractors and chiropractic care can be traced as far as 17
,500 BC. Hippocrates, the ancient healer and father of the Hippocratic Oath that all medical professionals are required to take, strongly believed that a misaligned spine can worsen the health of a person. Modern day chiropractic treatment dates back a few years more than a century to September 18, 1895, when the first chiropractic treatment was rendered by Dr. Daniel Palmer.
Dr. Palmer was born in Canada in 1845. Right from childhood, he expressed a deep interest in the art of healing. He was very interested in finding about the cause and effect of illness, and studied extensively to discover the causes of sickness and their effects sickness on the human body. Soon, he learned about magnetic healing, a form of therapy uses the magnetism present within the body. Dr. Palmer opened his first office in 1886 in Burlington, Iowa, where he offered magnetic healing. From there on, he expanded his practice with another office in the same town next year.
As earlier mentioned, his first chiropractic care was was done in the year 1895. This was performed on an individual who had lost his sense of hearing for 17 years. The patient said to Dr. Palmer that just before he stopped hearing, he had flexed his back and had heard a snapping sound in his back. Suspecting the presence of a spinal misalignment, Dr. Palmer examined him and found a vertebra out of order.
After Dr. Palmer set the vertebra back in its situation, the man's hearing happened to improve. It confirmed the doctors theory that if the spine is correctly aligned, the nerve flow to every part of the body will work appropriately and, thus, the body will be free of disease. Dr. Palmer was excited by the realization of his idea and its ability to cure myriad diseases.
Dr. Palmer opened his first chiropractic school in Davenport, Iowa, in 1897. He named it the Palmer Infirmary and Chiropractic Institute. The name was later altered to Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1907. firstly, enrollment was low and there were only 24 students in 1906, but now there are more than 20 schools under this institution with an enrollment of more than 10,000 students.
The educational necessity to receive the Doctor of Chiropractic Degree is a minimum of eight years of education after high school. It involves a four years study at the undergraduate level with two years of a pre-professional course. The syllabus includes biology, physiology, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, dermatology, pediatrics and genetics. Before graduating, a year of clinical internship is a must. After graduating, four national and state level examinations must be passed to get the license to practise.
Various medical professionals criticized this healing technique as it marked a departure from traditional medical theories. For several years, chiropractors were discredited and referred to as frauds due to misunderstandings. Many people didnt understand the concept and went along with the propaganda that was spread.
It was only in the early 1970s that insurance companies affirmed chiropractic as legal health care and allowed claims to be paid for chiropractic treatments. Today, the chiropractor is a respected medical expert and chiropractic is widely accepted by the medical community as a legal health treatment service.
