History Of Crates
Wooden crates
Wooden crates
When we talk of crates, we no longer think of wood crates any more. That is because they are nowadays made of a variety of materials, ranging from steel, aluminum to plastic. A crate is usually a large container in which items or goods are shipped. These are usually made of wood or so it was till other materials came into vogue equally. The large and heavy as well as awkward items need to be transported by such crates. These are usually carried by ships. Nowadays, even aeroplanes have become the major carriers of the crates which are shipped by courier companies. When it comes to small fragile items, these are usually shipped in small plastic crates. These are pliable, lightweight and at the same time, can provide enough of resistance so that the items are not damaged. Crates made of wood are usually self supporting and they may be with or without any form of sheathing. All the six sides in such containers are weighed and rated in their strength in order to determine whether a certain material or item can be shipped in such a crate. Since the overall weight matters in shipments whether by air or by water, the heaviness as well as the protection that is required need to be balanced out.
Shipping boxes vs crates
It is interesting when one looks up the history of shipping boxes. It is said that the first shipping crate was first documented in the year 1930 in a handbook in United States. Of course, history indicates that crates were in use much before that. There have been many types of testing that have been done in transport packaging over the years and much has changed over the times. It might not be clear as to when such containers were first made, but the edges and the corners were defined by the shipment that needed to be contained. Over the initial wooden design, there is a sheathing layer which is usually constructed which is made of plywood or lumber wood. The sheathing is what differentiates a crate from a box. When the sheathing is applied, it forms a closed box or container. When the sheathing is removed, then the bare wooden structure is called crate. This is the basic difference between crate and box.
Different materials of containers
Nowadays crates can be made of a variety of material, from wood, metal, plastic to other materials. A carte has to be strong and large. The plastic crates are usually smaller and meant for more delicate items. Metal containers are usually not preferred since their weight is considerable. Unless a reactive material is being shipped which requires to be contained by a specific metal, then only such metal containers are used. During shipment, the cost is calculated as per the weight of the container. There are other materials which are included such as stuffing of bubble wraps and other items to prevent damage to the item inside. But usually such items do not weigh much, the overall weight determines the cost of the package and its transportation cost.
