History Of Kitchen Sinks And Types Of Kitchen Sinks

With so many different types of kitchen sinks available today

, the process of picking out a new sink can be a somewhat daunting task. Opella sinks are a good choice for kitchen sink because they are so durable, and sinks in most kitchens get pretty heavy usage. Stainless steel sinks are still among the top pick for kitchen sinks, although Opella sinks in other materials (such as granite, quartz, porcelain, and copper) are also popular choices.

The first kitchen sinks were generally made of slate or copper. Later, in the 1920s, earthenware sinks were first made from clay, which were less expensive although much easier to chip and stain than copper or metal sinks. The white enamel-covered cast iron sink was a popular kitchen sink for decades, and you can still find it in many older homes throughout the United States. Porcelain sinks were introduced in the early part of the 20th century, and were quite popular during the wartime years when metal and steel were rationed and not as easily available. Many of these porcelain sinks have survived for 70 or 80 years. They may be pock marked or stained, but they are otherwise durable.

Sinks have changed a lot over the past hundred or so years of their existence. Until about 100 years ago, before indoor plumbing was common, most people washed their dishes, their vegetables, and their hands in water basins. If they weren't so fortunate as to have a servant to pour warm water into their water pitchers, they would have to wash each morning at water pumps. One early pre-cursors of the modern sink were the "dry sinks" that were basically big bowls or troughs that were built into wooden counter-height tables (but since there wasn't any indoor plumbing, you had to fill up and empty the "dry sink" troughs yourself with buckets of water from outside, or, if you wanted warm water, with water that had been brought in from the pump and then heated on the stove).

Stainless steel sinks became the new popular model of choice by the 1960s. Stainless steel sinks were stain resistant, economical, and relatively easy to install. They were resistant to chips, scratches, and wear, although highly polished "mirror finish" models have developed a reputation of being notoriously easy to scratch and dent.

About 10 years ago, the first significant kitchen sink innovations in 50 years hit the country, with new materials like granite becoming more readily available. Companies also developed solid surface sinks for the non-commercial industry, which are also popular.

During this time, Opella sinks developed a reputation for quality and environmentally responsible sinks and water faucets. Opella was originally part of a European manufacturing company, who specialized in faucets and drains. Today Opella is its own company, unconnected to their European beginnings, and now headquartered in Florida. Opella and has branched out from faucets and basket strainers to include innovative sink designs that have been used by thousands of people in the US and Canada.

Opella's brushed stainless steel sinks keep their finish and don't show age or wear. They offer timeless beauty and sophistication. Opella sinks are carried in fine, luxury bath and kitchen stores in the US and Canada.
