History Of Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery seems like such a new and modern technology and trend that many people
do not realize that it has been evolving throughout many centuries of mankind's life on earth. People have always sought after what they have perceived as beauty.
The earliest record of plastic surgery being practiced dates back to the early 8th century BC. During this time, old Indian doctors began to implement the use of skin grafts to reconstruct human skin spots.
Susrutha was a famous, ancient Indian surgeon that was the first success doctor to complete a nose construction. To complete the surgery he used some skin from the forehead.
Nose removal was common in Indian during this time. It was considered an appropriate punishment for many criminal acts.
It was until much later when the Roman began to implement plastic surgery by fixing ears. Much later, Dr. Heinrich von Pfolspeundt used skin grafts from the back of the arm to aid healing in Europe.
It is true that the practice of this surgery did not become a common practice until the 19th and 20th centuries. Previous to this time, medical procedure were just as dangerous as suffering through the disease due to lack of sanitation.
In the time of the United State, Dr. John Peter Mettauer is known as the first American plastic surgeon. His first operation occurred in 1827.
This surgery was performed on a cleft palate. Dr. Mettauer had to design and create the necessary instruments and operation materials because the profession had not really come out until now.
Despite his contributions, the father of modern plastic surgery is considered to be Sir Harold Gillies. Sir Gillies developed a variety of other techniques for the use in the profession.
His emphasis was to help those whose face had been disfigured in World War I. As a result of his contributions, plastic surgery has become known as treatment with aesthetic and functional goals.
Many people mistake plastic surgery as the reconstruction of the body through plastic simply because of what the operation is called. However, the name comes from 'plastikos' which is Greek for to shape or mold.
There are two main categories of plastic surgery. The first is reconstructive surgery.
This category mostly deals with the covering up or repairing of malformations or damage done to the face or other parts of the body. This includes the ancient practice of grafting the skin from other parts of the body.
The other category is referred to as aesthetic or cosmetic surgery. This is the more popular of the two, today.
The purpose of cosmetic surgery is to improve the natural look of a person through modifying parts of the body that the patient finds ugly.
Under these two major categories there are many smaller categories. There are many subcategories under cosmetic surgery available today.
One of these categories is called craniofacial surgery. This surgery repairs congenital of in-born physical defects such as cleft lip palate and craniosynostosis.
Plastic surgery can be a blessing for these people who have not control over serious birth defects that will affect their ability to function and their health. Another subcategory of such surgery is called hand surgery.
These surgeries have to do with the function and beauty of the area of the body from the shoulder extending to the hands. Maxillofacial surgery is the reconstruction of the maxilla or jaw and face.
Maxillofacial surgery was born out of oral surgery. Accidents causing fractures in the jaw or face may require maxillofacial surgery.
Many men turn to hair replacement surgeries after they begin to bald. In this procedure the surgeon will take healthy hair follicles from the back of the head and graft them onto the balding area.
These areas are genetically different and will not succumb to balding like the earlier hair follicles. Plastic surgery is something that the Hollywood stars depend on for their career.
These operations extend their 'natural' beauty and allow them to remain celebrities for much longer than was typical before the development of plastic surgery.
