History Of Printers

The original laser printer was developed in 1969 at the Xerox Research centre by Gary Starkweather

, and then in 1971 adapted Xerox copier technology adding a laser beam to come up with the Laser printer.

The first printer to combine laser technology and electro photography was the IBM 3800 installed in 1976 at the accounting offices of F.W. Woolworths data centre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This was the industrys first high-speed laser printer.

While large and often quoted as taking up a whole room was used for high volume printing of documents, it was designed for an entirely different purpose, and although a primitive version of the later devices used with a personal computer, many 3800s are still in use.

When personal computers became more widespread, the HP LaserJet 8ppm was the first laser printer intended for a mass market, and was released in 1984, this was quickly followed by laser printers from Brother Industries, IBM and many others.

Hewlett-Packard released the Laser Jet 4 in 1992, which was the first 600 by 600 dots per inch resolution laser printer.

The inkjet printer was invented in 1976 but took a few years for the inkjet to become a home consumer item with the release of the DeskJet inkjet printer by Hewlett-Packard in 1988.
