Back in the 1880s, Australian divers came upon the PinctadaMaxima oysters. Owing to the oysters" large size and thelustrous quality of their pearls, they were soon harvested en masse. Their numbers were so great that during low tide, one could actually pick up an oyster right out of the sand.

Before long, the town of Broome, Australia, became the centerof high quality pearl production. At one point, this small town supplied 75 percent of the world"s pearls, which were commonly used in the manufacture of shirt buttons. Divers often came across naturally cultivated pearls, which were in huge demand at that time.

The 1930s saw a depletion of these oyster beds due to over harvesting. The government was forced to strictly regulate the harvest in order to prevent the oysters from becoming extinct. Soon, new and different kinds of pearls flooded the global market, and thefirst commercial pearl culturing farm was started in Western Australia in 1956. Today, Australia produces about 60 percent of the world's South Sea cultured pearls.Other south sea pearlproducers include Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.
