History Of The Sandwich

In some form or another, sandwiches have been around for a long time - since before

the days of Christ, according to some writings which describe a rabbi eating a matzo with apple slices and nuts. Of course, this was as far from what we consider a sandwich as you can get, but the basic idea was there - bread and other foods is better than just other foods.

In the 1700s, the fourth earl of Sandwich, John Montague, garnered attention and gave the 'new' food form its classic name - sandwich. The earl, according to legend, was an inveterate gambler and did not want to stop the game, so he asked the servant to bring him meat between two slices of bread, and the modern form of the sandwich was begun.

It turned out to be revolutionary, and today we can see the fruits of this small, humble snack. There have been so many variations on the sandwich that it would truly take an encyclopedic volume. No matter what your taste, whether you eat meat or are a vegetarian, whether you like whole wheat or sourdoughs, there is a sandwich somewhere that makes a perfect meal for anyone.

Over the intervening 250 years, the sandwich has been turned into an art form that is now popular throughout the world, and it has made its way in various forms into every culture; in fact, it has inspired cooks throughout the world, and turned more than one casual hobbyist into people who seek the perfect ingredients on a more pure basis. It is people like these that start baking their own bread to get the perfect bread or roll for their sandwich, and it is these people who sometimes open artisan bakeries.

Thanks to these perfectionists, though, it is a lot easier for anyone can make bread - and if you have never had an Italian sandwich on a homemade ciabatta, you don't know what you are missing. Salami, maybe some pepperoni, some olive relish made with olive oil, olives, basil, garlic and other spices, maybe a little prosciutto and some thick sliced provolone - toast the ciabatta first to make it extra crunchy, but everything else should go on cold - that's the way to make a real Italian!

Homemade bread can help make any sandwich go from ordinary to sublime; home made whole wheat tomato and grilled cheese? With the soft crumb and crispy crust this bread, especially when made with a dough enhancer, is the epitome of perfect for a great grilled cheese and tomato soup lunch; it makes a great dinner too, especially with a few strips of bacon and a thin slice of tomato added to the sandwich, and a strip of bacon crumbled in the soup, with perhaps just a pinch of basil and fresh grated cheddar cheese.

The next time you order a sandwich, think about the history of this great meal choice. It started as a little snack, something that was easy to eat, and now has variations which include using commercial cake mixes to make ice cream sandwiches.
