When the name Switzerland is mentioned, a number of things might spring to mind:

But one of the main associations with this country lies in its rich heritage of watch making, which came into being in the mid sixteenth century. Since then, Swiss watches are to be found in every jewellers, in every corner of the globe, and Swiss time pieces have become closely linked with other associations, too: elegance, attention to detail, an eye for design and innovation in technology.

Gucci might not be one of the first brand names you might think of when considering Switzerlands history of watch and clock making, but beneath the sleek, ergonomic design features of Gucci watches which are the trademark of the Gucci fashion house beats a very Swiss heart. In 1921, Guccio Gucci set up an accessories store in Italy. The brands success was blossoming and soon Gucci watches became part of the company. One of the most famous designs was a watch with a simple bold G which came in a smaller size for women, and a larger size for men. Gucci watches offer the best in function while at the same time offering all the sophistication and style one can expect from a fashion house such as Gucci. Gucci watches are highly sought after by the fashion conscious and make a classic addition to any outfit.

One of the more closely associated brands with Swiss watch making was developed in 1976 in Geneva. Raymond Weil watches are one of the few independent watch making companies left in Switzerland, and have a legacy of excellence and innovation behind them. Raymond Weil watches are famous for their elegant design and comfortable feel when worn on the wrist. The company is now present worldwide. In 2007, the company renewed its identity, adopting the motto: Independence is a state of mind. This is clearly reflected in the design and function of the Raymond Weil range, which includes stainless steel quartz models as well as an eighteen carat pink gold, carbon fibre and titanium model with an automatic winding mechanism.

Lastly, Tissot, now a member of one of the biggest watch manufacturers in the world, was founded in 1853 by Charles-Flicien Tissot and Charles-Emile Tissot. Although to this day the Tissot headquarters remain in Le Locle, Switzerland, the company has now progressed to reach around one hundred and fifty countries worldwide. The company pioneered the first mass produced pocket watch featuring two time zones in 1853, and between 1929 and 1930 produced the first magnetic watch. Since then, this sense of discovery and innovation has not dwindled with one of Switzerlands most famous watch making companies. In 1971, the company was the first of its kind to manufacture watches constructed from plastic, stone in 1985, and in 1987 mother of pearl, suggesting that the Tissot Company pays just as much attention to innovation in design as it does technology.
