History of Casual Wear for Women
The history of casual wear, especially in the realm of women's apparel
, is not too far to behold. In fact, fashion clothing, including women's casual apparel and other forms of informal women's dresses has only emerged quite recently. A detailed look at casual wear history tells us that women's casual clothing made a very prominent arrival only during the late twentieth century, to be precise, sometime around the 1900's.
Women's casual apparel emerged as a reaction to the stiff upper-lip women's clothing that had been in vogue during the earlier era. Women's apparel had in the era before abounded in exceptional costume-inspired pieces, which were elaborate and largely preferred by the high-society ladies at the time.
However, women's fashion clothing history underwent a sea-change with the casual style making an appearance with a vengeance. The term casual wear arises from the very fact that these women's dresses are comfortable, easy-to-handle and unfussy.
Not only were women's casual apparel seen as a break-away from the restrictions of the lavish feminine designs of the past, these women's clothing were taken to be a sign of their independence. In fact, women began experimenting more with their clothes and started trying out a variety of relaxing clothes that were easy to maintain while at the same time making one appear snug and comfy!
With the gradual introduction of synthetic fabrics including such materials as nylon and polyester, women's clothing found much more freedom in its make and style. Casual yet fashionable, these women's dresses were an extreme shift from the fashion of the previous years, when fashion was fussy and sophisticated.
The history of casual wear during the late 60's and 70's saw women's casual clothing take on a more androgynous look. The women began sporting pants in an increasing number, and the most fashionable clothes at the time were bell bottomed pants, denims and even hot-pants. The mini-skirt was also much in vogue in women's dresses, with women resorting to casual dresses to lay emphasis on their right to liberty and freedom.
After this period, casual wear history shows that high fashion, though preferred in some high-class sections had become a niche area, with women's casual clothing taking on a greater section of the fashion world. The area of women's dresses was also greatly influenced by the music industry at the time, with rock-and-roll inspired ripped jeans coming into fashion in a major way, and hip-hop bringing in its baggy-style pants.
Women's apparel has since then been all about comfort and relaxation. Today, the most popular women's dresses, whether at the work place or outside, include casual dresses in soft earthy colours made of such breathable fabrics as cotton. Long or short, teamed with jackets or not, accessorised with purses, sandals or hats or not casual women's clothing is the in thing at this moment.
