History of the English Bulldog

Out of all dogs, perhaps it would be safe to say that the English Bulldog has had the most difficult past. The first English Bulldogs originated from the British Isles and got the name "bull" because of their involvement in the bloody sport of bull baiting. In this extremely violent sport, English Bulldogs were trained to be exceptionally ferocious and savage to make them almost impervious to pain.

Bull baiting was a popular pastime among the masses. The objective of bull baiting was basically to have the English Bulldog take down a bull. The activity did not necesarrily require a one on one duel. Often times two to three bulldogs are put up against a bull. Their main task is to engage the bull. The English Bulldogs were trained to creep close enough to the bull to grab their nose. However, since bulls have grown accustomed to the game, they do what they can to prevent the English Bulldogs from accomplishing their task. The most morbid part of the game is that the English Bulldogs were often flung around and severly injured whenever the bulls would charge at them with their horns. The game would often end with the bull stomping all over the English Bulldogs' bodies until they are unable to retaliate.Most English Bulldogs were unable to heal from their matches; their severe injuries often resulted to death.

This is why the English Bulldog has such a specific built. They have stocky bodies to tolerate blows and short legs to enable them to get up quickly after a fall. Fortunately, in the year 1835, enough people finally vouched that this sport be made illegal in England. Some people believed that the English bulldog has outlived their usefulness, but most people believed that it was definitely not worth it to have the breed die out.

Dog lovers worked hard to preserve the breed. They proceeded by eliminationg the undesirable traits of the English Bulldog and worked on preserving and accentuating their finer qualities. Over the course of time, the English Bulldog finally became known to be loyal and trusty companions.

Almost completely removed from their violent image in the past, English Bulldogs today are known to be extremely spirited yet calm. Their pleasant demeanor makes these dogs a pleasure to care for. Whatever the case, we should delight in the fact that the English Bulldog has evolved into the breed that it is today.
