T-shirts, also referred to as tee shirts, golf shirts and polo shirts

, are worn by almost everyone in Tampa FL as elsewhere in the United States. T-shirts are favorites as casual daily wear and also as uniforms and promotional items. Because of this, custom wholesale T shirts with embroidery or printing are very easy to source in Tampa FL. It would be interesting to learn how this garment has evolved through time.

Although there are no official documents available, there are reports that light cotton undershirts very similar to today's t-shirts were first seen worn by European soldiers in World War I. The word "t-shirt" first appeared in the English dictionary in the 1920s. By World War II the US Army and US Navy adapted the same undershirts as part of their uniforms.

It was in 1948 that the slogan t-shirt was first used. Thomas E. Dewey, then New York governor, used it for his campaign with the slogan, "Dew it with Dewey." In the middle of the 1950s the t-shirt became popular wear among young people after it was worn as an outer shirt onscreen by Hollywood stars John Wayne, Marlon Brando and James Dean. Companies in Miami, Florida then got licensed to use the names of resorts and characters from Walt Disney as designs in t-shirts.

Today, the t-shirt has evolved to include various forms apart from the basic t-shaped garment with a round neck, short sleeves and no collar, pocket or buttons. It can now have various types of collars and sleeves, or even no sleeves at all.

T-shirts in all their variants, including polo shirts, golf shirts, statement tee shirts and custom embroidered T shirts, are here to stay. They may evolve even more in the future but they will never totally go out of use, whether in Tampa FL or elsewhere.
