Hit Single "lights" Positions Ellie Goulding In The Spotlight
Elena Jane Goulding, better known for her stage name Ellie Goulding
, is a relatively new artist. However, this singer-songwriter already boasts major accomplishments. In 2010 Goulding became the second recording artist to top the BBC's Sounf of... annual poll and win the Critics' Choice Award at the Brit Awards in the same year. The only other artist to accomplish this was Adele in 2008.
Ellie Goulding signed her first recording contract to Polydor Records in 2009. Her first official single under her label is "Wonderman". "Lights" is a song included in Ellie Goulding's debut album also entitled Lights. This song is the album's overall sixth single and it was officially released in March, 2011. However, the song was re-edited and re-released as the second single on Goulding's re-packaged album now titled Bright Lights.
A noteworthy fact about this hot electro-pop jam is that it was recorded in 2008, three years before is official release. Ellie Goulding had a fear of the dark during her childhood; this experience is what inspired "Lights". The single was written by Ellie Goulding, Ash Howes and Richard Stannard. Ash Howes and Richard Stannard and also produced the song.
"Lights" was a silent hit in the United States. It spent a total of one year and three months on Billboard's Hot 100 before it finally peaked at number two in August, 2012. This culmination happened after its official release in May, 2011 - That's a long time to spend on the Hot 100 Billboard chart. In an interview with AP Goulding comments that when "Lights" started blowing up in the U.S. she was actually ready to move on to the next project, she says she had already been promoting the song in the U.S. a long time before it gained so much popularity. The singer says that "Lights" had a journey of its own.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified "Lights" with triple platinum for over three million downloads in sales in the U.S. alone. This song also made an appearance in music charts from around the world. It peaked at number seven in the Canadian Hot 100, reached number one on the US Pop Songs chart, peaked at number four on the US Adult Pop Songs chart and it peaked at forty-nine on The UK's UK Singles Chart.
Sophie Muller filmed the official music video for "Lights" in 2010. This happened before the re-edited single was re-released on the Bright Lights album. The video was officially released on Goulding's YouTube channel in January, 2011. In the video you see clips of the singer dancing on a platform while lighting effects and lasers are displayed around her. She also appears playing the tambourine and percussion drums, and in other scenes she's shown swinging hand-held torches and lights; this gives the viewer the impression of someone making a painting with lights.
