Hockey As National Game
Today, one can hardly deny of being aware of the fact that hockey is the national game of India
, but have you ever wondered why the game has lost its glory? Whatever mode of information you come along, you will find the news of Cricket being flashed with discussions, reviews, reports and convictions, but how often do you get news about hockey games?
There is absolutely nothing wrong in promoting a game, rewarding players and giving importance to them, but we should not forget that there are some other aspects of sports that we have recognized. It is not obvious or abnormal that the new generations is getting abstained of the glory our country had in the ground of Hockey.
But, those are considered good olden days, where India had remained undisputed for six long Olympics. With total of eight gold wins, India has earned the reputation of the highest gold medal winners of all time. Once upon a time, people considered India to be undefeatable and the matches being held were taken to be granted and one sided. But if you evaluate the current position of the game, it would appear that the game has lost its glory.
We even find it difficult to qualify to finals in Common Wealth games, of Asia Cup, let alone the World Cup. The players are depressed and feel segregated; with not much encouragement not much sponsorship. Moreover, the exposure is very less while the players struggle a lot to appear in the limelight.
To elaborate, here are some factors explaining the fact:
a)Not many people are interested in this game in India, though still a large number of people show keen interest.
b)It fails to attract much crowd, nor media attention. Hardly you would notice some breaking news of flash news of hockey on the front page.
c)Lack of sponsors and advertisers have crippled this game with shortage of funds.
d)The scope for this game is very limited. Even if one has a good sportsman in him, he will be compelled to think twice in playing hockey for rest of his life.
e)The reward offered is very less when compared to game like cricket.
f)We have often witnessed that we pay hearty welcome to our cricket when they return even without any win, but this does not happen in case of hockey.
g)There are very limited organisations that show interest in promoting the game of hockey. The competition is less which results in not much refinement in the process of selection.
These facts are really heartbreaking and gives us a gut feeling that we have really lost our way. Despite of having superb players, experience and the fame, we are not able to capitalise in this game. Much of the credit goes to the financial investors that have identified the right source of income and see profit in each game. With so many disadvantages, one might be compelled to think that hockey might soon become history for India and we might be wondering and debating on some other game for nationalization. So, let us work together and help this game prosper and regain its lost glory so as to make our Mother India proud.
