There is an abundance of luxury in Dartmouth, which you will find in the fine dining, scenic landscapes and waterfront accommodation. The historical significance of its naval history gives Dartmouth considerable importance that many are intrigued to discover. The natural deep water harbour was a strategic sailing point since the ancient times. Two strong fortified castles, the Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle stand at the entrance of the mouth of River Dart. These castles protected Devonians from invaders and guarded the port of Dartmouth. This defence complex was built under the direction of John Hawley who is speculated to be the Shipman in Chaucers Canterbury Tales.
The gun tower of the Dartmouth Castle is a later addition after a century of its construction and is a well preserved building. It is perhaps the very first fortification in Britain built for the purpose of launching heavy cannons to sink ships. The view from its top is breathtaking and you can see how the heavy chain across the estuary could block it during wartime. The Kingswear Castle was used as a coastal artillery tower. The Britannia Royal Naval College is also situated in Dartmouth. It is the training college where all Royal Navy officers are trained. Visitors are allowed to tour the college and it is an interesting experience for all those who want a glimpse of maritime training. A holiday of luxury in Dartmouth is a way to experience the hidden pleasures of the town. Many arts, antiques and crafts shops alongside the cobbled streets provide indulgence to the ones who want to shop for the extraordinary.
Dartmouth presents fascinating architecture from the past, with Butterwalk, The Cherub Inn being two of the most historic buildings. The Dartmouth Museum is housed in Butterwalk.
