Head down to the main shopping centres, home to shopaholics. The Gran Via is the main shopping area which offers some of the best stores in Europe. For the youngsters, there are lots to keep them entertained with the local zoo and aquarium, the Faunia Theme Park, the Wax Museum and a Warner Bros Theme Park. The town comes alive at night for everybody and anybody, with theatres, restaurants with their own floor shows, ballets, concerts and operas. The decision of where to go is the only one you need make.
Throughout the day, there are all those fantastic sights to go and see, plenty of which can on occasion be seen from the open-top tour bus if you are feeling too tired to walk. The Palacio Real or Royal Palace has been the home of the Spanish Royal Monarchy in Madrid since 1764 and is one of the more popular destinations for holidaymakers. Across its courtyard is the Royal Armoury and close by are the lovely Sabatini Gardens and the Cathedral of Almudena, where Prince Felipe not too long ago was married.
The Piazza Mayor is a big square of 3-storey buildings built in 1617 with a statue of Felipe III on horseback at its centre. The Puerta de Alcal, found in the middle of the Square de la Independencia, is on Calle de Alcal, where you may also find the Arts Museum and the Casino. At the other end of the street is the Puerta del Sol. Moving along to the Square, you will find monuments devoted to Columbus and his travels. In the middle of this square are the Gardens of Discovery, towered over by large blocks of stone inscribed with details of Columbus travels.
Madrid is known for its museums and a serious attraction is the Prado Museum, housing the world's best collection of Spanish paintings. Two other museums easily worth a visit are the Museo Thyseen-Bornemisza in the Palacio de Villahermosa and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. Along with the Prado they make up the Golden Triangle of Madrid.
Madrid also has many parks and gardens. Although the sea is too far for a day out, the parks more than make up for that with green spaces and many lakes found in them. The major one being the gigantic 12-hectare Parque del Buen Retiro with its two palaces and central lake. Another example of the grandeur of Madrid la Cibeles in the central Square de la Cibeles and the Fountain of Neptune near to the Prado Museum, also not too far from your
