Holidaying In Goa

Goa is one of the best known beach destinations in the world and the region is famous

for its laid back atmosphere, mouth watering sea food and picturesque beach landscapes. Goa lies on the western part of India and is the smallest state of the country. The main industry of this region is tourism. The Arabian Sea adjoins the region lying to its west. The state of Goa is surrounded by regions of Maharashtra to its north and parts of Karnataka to its east and south. Goas ideal and lovely beach environment attracts a host of tourists from all parts of the world. Besides beaches, you can also see the region packed with paddy fields and coconut trees.

The coastal parts of Goa and regions around the state together form a culture which is known as the Konkan culture. This is rather rich in tradition and culture. A very conspicuous aspect of Goa is its Portuguese influence. This region was in fact ruled by the Portuguese Empire for almost 450 years. While the entire country was under the British, Goa and some coastal islands in Western India were under the control of the Portuguese. After that it passed on to the Biritish Empire under which it remained till the country attained independence. Strong Portuguese influence is evident in the construction of its buildings and churches. Also, the food of the place is spicy and has the flavor of Portuguese cuisine. You can take a quiet walk along the roads in the Portuguese quarters in old Goan towns.

St Francis Xavier was buried in Old Goa and is therefore of great importance to Catholic Christians. Other than Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Feast of St Francis is also celebrated rather grandly. The Goa coastline has a number of beach towns lined along it some of which are really popular while some others arent that frequented. Calanguteand Baga are among the most popular ones while Arambol,Anjuna andPalolem are among the less frequented ones. Another special feature of beaches in Goa is its water activities such as paragliding, water-scooters, dolphin spotting cruises, sailing and water skiing.

Panaji is the capital of the state but the airport is not situated here. The state airport lies 29 kilometers away from the Goan capital in a town called Dabolim. In Goan regions like Panaji and Margao, you will find a lot of Portuguese influences. Ponda has many Hindi temples believed to have been built between the 15th and 18th centuries. The time between the months of November and February is the best time to visit Goa. Since the state is a coastal region, the place remains humid for most of the year.
