Holistic Approaches To Overcoming Fibromyalgia And Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by a nearly constant fatigue

, difficulty in warming the body, and headaches. Fibromyalgia (FMS) is characterized by diffuse muscle pain, poor sleep, and unrelenting fatigue. Women account for 90 percent of those experiencing fibromyalgia. Studies indicate that as many as 73 percent of people with FMS have irritable bowel syndrome.

Possible causes of FMS and CFS include trauma, liver dysfunction, and chronic viral or bacterial infections.

When approaching fibromyalgia, it is first important to look at other causes of the symptoms. Dehydration may cause many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), including depression, excess body weight, high blood pressure, fatigue, and headaches.

Symptoms such as low body temperature, cold hands and feet, tingling in the extremities, and fatigue, which are common to both fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, are also consistent with those associated with low thyroid function. The hypothalamus gland is known as the bodys master computer. A dysfunction in this gland may result in the reduction of human growth hormone, which produces symptoms that include a lack of energy and optimism or difficulty with concentration and memory.

Individuals with FMS and CFS usually experience a lower functioning of the adrenal system. Vitamin C is considered a crucial nutrient for facilitating adrenal function and repair.

Additionally critical is the functioning of the lymph system. Not only is a poorly functioning detoxification system associated with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, depression,, and systemic candidiasis, but it also contributes to allergic disorders, asthma, hives, psoriasis and eczema.

Since poor sleep and fatigue are common to both fibromyalgia and CFS, elevating serotonin levels is also very important.

Managing chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia holistically involves identifying the underlying causes, and not just treating the symptoms. A whole-body approach is necessary with these often elusive health situations.
