Holistic Counseling For A Wholesome Destiny

If we are going to assess how we are doing as whole human beings

, we will want to look at the three functions of our being. Rudolf Steiner presents this threefoldness - thinking, feeling and willing - in terms of our degree of conscious engagement, which happens to be a very effective means to enter into our personal evolution.

In capsule, we engage these three arenas in the following manner: in our thinking we are awake, in our feeling we are in a dreaming state, and in our willing we are sound asleep (and this is why Waldorf education seeks to engage all three arenas equally, to awaken the whole human being). Actually, we awaken to our willing forces, and its incumbent wisdom, when we tackle mathematical and geometric exercises - so we have a means of engaging this arena. These days, it is largely in the feeling realm that we miss out - much wisdom resides here, waiting to be integrated into our lives.

As a counselor, by empowering consciousness within the feeling realm can lead a client into this central arena where our core wisdom resides - that is, at the center of the center, so to speak.

Because, at this time in human development, discrepancy arises between our external life and our internal life, significant confusion and impairment enters into our functioning, amplifying the issues we may be dealing with in our lives.

There are exercises - those of Anthroposophic meditations (or equivalent Western style, modern, exercises) - Knowledge of Higher Worlds meditations, for example, that help us to attune and awaken to our inner resources along lines so needed today. We can practice the day review near the end of the day (running ones day backward to its beginning), and a waking meditation immediately when we rise in the morning, to set the tone of the day and access the wisdom from the higher Self that strives to come through in the night. And, ideally, we are well to add a third meditation sometime in the day to further engage the process of awakening to our newly evolving spiritual faculties.

A person experiencing issues in life (most of us!) can benefit from two approaches. One, to practice, as an individual (and also in groups, of course) the meditative exercises. And, two, to take sessions from a counselor who has an understanding of our latent human powers, who is familiar enough with inner resources to have faith in the individuals capacity to come to their own resolutions, versus imposing from a materialistic perspective (unaware of the greater field within). A counselors deepening understanding of human nature, such as can be accessed via the spiritual science of anthroposophy - but without insinuating that perspective on the client - helps hold a greater space in which the client can unfold the process of remediation that organically arises within, when given that space. This phenomena becomes a natural process of spirt-wisdom emerging.

A parts perspective is useful too: visualize a great banquet table spread for a host of guests. And invite all your inner parts to attend this feast. No one is to be excluded. In contrast to what many of us do - repress a part, or even try to wipe it out - every part serves a positive purpose, its just that some parts need to be aligned with our central being. When there is a dissociation from the core, a part behaves destructively, or in an impaired fashion. Through inner work, the part can be welcomed in, and aligned to the core, so that it becomes transformed into its destined function and role in our life. The rabid wolf becomes a friendly wolf, bearing strength, stamina, and discernment. The ugly nagging hag becomes a warm crone of wisdom with a beautiful countenance. Eventually, all the parts come together, even parts that have come to war against each other.

This process takes time and application of patience, and raising of mindfulness within the inner field. As one becomes more familiar with the Core of ones being, one increasingly resources oneself with the peace, wisdom, love, and pure being of the Self. With such resources in flow, one comes more effectively to meet external issues in life.

The rise of disorders in our time is largely due to the dis-connect with inner resources. Our society doesnt teach esoteric development to its young. We are then compelled to learn it otherwise. Now, both individual exercise, rigorous practice, and holistic counseling sessions can bring us to our fuller, more whole-some, destiny. Effective, holistic counseling sessions can facilitate a persons unfolding - along their own individual path - and can help integrate dissociated parts, as well as help align with esoteric development needs, not to mention help contend with addictions, trauma, hospice issues, relationship issues, and a whole raft of related matters.
