For the person looking to have additional income, it is very difficult to start a traditional small business because of the initial startup inventment but more importantly the time commitments that come with a traditional small business. The most attractive alternative is the home based internet business. They have a MUCH lower cost to get started and can be structured to work around your regular schedule. Imagine having a business that you can work on when you feel like it or when you have time and runs itself the rest of the time.Home based internet business opportunities come in many varieties generating revenue through selling goods (e-stores), advertising (such as affiliate programs), offering information, etc. Most small internet business owner tend to have multiple businesses online and will often target multiple types of income.I realized a long time ago that I wanted to have multiple income streams but was not in a position to start a conventional business. My doctorate was mostly complete and I was not about to stop to work on something else full time. I concluded that my only choice was to have an internet business that I could work on when I had time. My wife and I worked together to create a new premium bath and body brand that sold exclusively online. That company began to grow wildly and with it's success we hired others to take care of the daily work and within a year we were looking for ways to diversify.We next purchased an already established online shoe store and began to link between the two sites and do search engine optimization. This initially ailing site experienced unparalled increases in traffic and search engine rankings to the point that within 4 months we were ready to have someone run this company as well and move on. After that we began building a series of websites that earn revenue through affiliate marketing and advertising and have seen them grow the steady income produces within a few short months of starting. With continued success there, we felt that the best way to continue is to begin enabling others to do the same. There is unlimited possibilities online. The internet is still very much in it's infancy and is well on it's way to becoming main street USA. We've come to learn a number of things through the past three years that I now recommend to others. First, if you want to start an online business, try to find someone to mentor you. You will be far more successful from the start if you have an experienced professional to guide you. Second, even though starting an online business is far less expensive than a conventional small business, it still costs a lot of money. It may seem like all you need is a computer, an internet connection, and a website, but it takes more than that. You need a business entity, which comes with continued expenses and you need the tools to make your business grow, and if you don't have a lot of time, you need the capital to pay others to do anything you don't have time to do. Third, if I were to do it all over again, I would have started with the affiliate programs, and then moved onto online stores. Affiliate programs do not have as much earning potential, but they cost much less to get started and are faster to return a profit. Because cash flow is paramount to any businss, the sooner you get to positive cash flow, the easier everything else becomes. Fourth, it does not matter where you start. If you are reluctant to start because you want to make sure you start with the right business, don't worry about it. On the internet, your entire network of sites grow together. Because every site you own is cross linked in multiple ways, no matter where you concentrate your efforts, every site included in the network benefits. So get started and when you know exactly what it is you want to do, switch over, link the sites together and keep moving. You have lost nothing from starting down a different path.If you have been looking for a way to have a home based internet business and don't know if it is a good idea, take from my experience that there is still unlimited potential online, but before you start something, talk with someone who has done it before and can help you setup the right business to fit your time demands and the level of financial commitment you can make.
