Red: The old adage about apples and doctors definitely has merit. Adding apples to your list of go-to snack items can help weed out excessive calories and provides extra vitamin C to boost your immunity. But don't stop at just apples. Consider adding other fruits like raspberries, cranberries or strawberries. These are also a great source of vitamin C and anti-oxidants and are easy to toss into a salad, bowl of granola or trail mix.

Orange: There are plenty of orange foods that are great for your health. Sweet potatoes can be roasted or mashed and offer lots vitamin A and C. Carrots are also an excellent source for vitamins and can be an easy, low-calorie snack.


Yellow: Many yellow foods like corn and squash offer antioxidants and beta-carotene. Yellow squash and corn are both usually available in markets year round, but are at their prime in the summer. Grill them up with some olive oil, salt and pepper and you have a delicious side dish that looks as good as it tastes.

Green: Green is often synonymous with health. Dark green foods are often the most nutrition-packed available. Spinach, kale and mustard greens are a great source of beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin C. They can be roasted, sauteed or boiled into soups and are easy to find throughout the year.

Blue/Purple: Blue and purple food may not seem like a common thing, but dark berries like blueberries, blackberries and acai berries are powerful antioxidants. They boost the immune system and taste great in jams, jellies, salads or covered in dark chocolate.
