Home Care Helps Prepare Seniors For Tornado And Other Severe Weather Emergencies
Home care experts care about the safety and well-being of their clients
. Not only do home care providers offer elderly care or other senior services for their clients, but their concerns extend to all aspects of clients' well being, including emergency preparedness. During winter months, home care providers can assist clients with winter safety by monitoring the heat in the home or reducing the risk of falls by clearing snow from pathways. In the spring, heavy rains and storms can produce powerful tornados capable of destroying entire towns, as experienced by many in the U.S. already this year.
With tornados and severe storms hitting much of the U.S., it is appropriate for home care services to offer a refresher on disaster preparedness. Consider this, 60% of people who died in Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina were older than 60. Family members should talk with older loved ones today about what to do in case of emergency to ensure they remain safe and unharmed!
-Establish a "safe room." Discuss with elderly family members where to go in the event of a severe storm or tornado warning. Be sure it's on the lowest floor of the building, has no windows or glass doors and is accessible for those who use a wheelchair or walker.
-Create a "grab and go" kit. Fill a duffle bag or bin with cash, a phone charger, clothing, irreplaceable family heirlooms, extra medications, a blanket, a battery-operated radio and a list of important phone numbers for family, friends, physicians and other medical or home care service providers.
-Make a plan. Talk to senior loved ones who live independently about what plans they have in case of emergency. Who will call them to make sure they're okay? Where will they go if they need to evacuate? Is there a close friend or relative who can help get them to a safe location? Also, meet with your loved one's neighbors to develop a strategy to keep all safe during natural disasters.
-Ask questions. If your older loved one lives in an assisted living facility or senior community, talk to the staff and management about the community's disaster plan. Will your loved one be safe and accounted for during an emergency? Will you or another emergency contact be called? Does the staff have a plan in place to help less mobile residents? Don't be afraid to ask questions and get answers about their emergency senior services and plans.
Preparation is the best way to handle emergencies and give peace of mind. If you and your loved ones do not have a plan, consider sitting down with them and their home care or elderly care provider to establish a course of action.
