There is no set time to make your own compost but as the spring is on its way and

your garden starts to come to life it is a good time to feed your garden with home-made compost that you may have made earlier. Having compost that is full of nutrients and minerals will produce healthy and happy flowers and vegetables all year round.

A compost bin can be made from either plastic or wood or even pallets but if it is on show and cant be hidden from sight then a painted or stained slatted beehive compost bin or a plastic composter may be a better option for your garden. All compost bins work on the same principle where you add the organic kitchen food waste, or grass cuttings, old flowers and leaves from the garden and occasionally turn the contents with a fork or stick in the composter to help add more air which helps break down the contents more quickly.

After a few months you should have a crumbly nice smelling home-made compost which you can either use straight away in your garden either to place on your flower beds, spread as a mulch around your boarders or use it in your hanging baskets or tubs or even bag it up and store in a dry place till you need it. By making your own compost at home you are saving yourself money and helping the environment and with only the initial outlay cost for the composter, you shouldnt need to buy anymore compost and knowing that you have made the compost you are using gives you satisfaction.

With the kitchen waste you cant add to your compost bin you can place in your food bin from your local council so you dont stop helping them with the extra food waste you may have.

Your wooden beehive composter should have been pressure treated with a preservative to protect the wood but like any wood product it is best to paint or stain it once you have placed it in your garden and you can choose what colour you would like it. The wooden composter should last you for several years if looked after and just think of how much money you have saved and how good your flowers look and how tasty your vegetables are satisfaction assured.
