Home Depot & Veranda decking
Thinking about getting your next deck or fence installed by the Home Depot installation crew? Or how about your next new DIY project in replacing your old rotten deck boards? Think again. I've been an avid shopper at Home Depot since I started this company and will always be (mainly because they exclusively carry my favourite brand of tools: RIDGID). Although the mass online advertising campaign Home Depot has recently started had me curious to find out a little more about their decking operations.
They are the exclusive dealer of Veranda decking, made of "wood and plastic that is extruded with a reversible finish". Composite decking has always had a bad reputation so I wanted to find out if Veranda was any different. I stumbled upon an article about composite decking recall from the Veranda brand and honestly I wasn't surprised. The article talks begins with "48 million linear feet of LP WeatherBest, ABTCo and Home Depot Veranda composite decking were recalled after dozens of reports were received where the boards deteriorated and unexpectedly broke, in some cases causing serious injury." Some of these decks were installed as early as 2005 and there wasn't an official settlement until September of 2010.
In a situation like this, the home owner often sees mutliple parties at fault:
First and foremost the contractor. Clients tend to trust experienced professionals expending they have a good understanding of the products they're installing. However, with a brand new product that seems almost impossible from my perspective. We (as contractors) tend to trust other authority figures on new products (like Home Depot trusted manufacturers).
Home Depot and Veranda: Being the big brand behind the distribution line and the manufacturer, shouldn't they jump at the opportunities to rectify PR nightmares. Unfortunately big companies like these often hide behind PR firms and Lawyers.
The moral of the story? If I have a customer thats absolutely tied to a product like this- I won't install it. The blame will always come back on the deck contractor first. I prefer not to hide behind a PR firm, I give advice coming form past experiences. Although if you're looking to install new decking, make sure you get a well educated opinion first- or take the research on yourself. You have a global encyclopedia at your fingertips.
