Home Design Starts With Lighting
Your home really becomes a home when it makes your living easier
. One of the factors of home design can be lighting design. Your home's lighting can affect the safety of your home, it can affect the mood of the people who live in it, and can make it easier to deal with in the winter time when sunlight is sparse.
Lots of factors can influence lighting design; what will the room be used for, and where will people be sitting or standing in the room? Focused lighting for indirect effects generally work well, but lighting design can be a venue for our creativity. There are more options now than there used to be even a decade ago. Many of these choices offer unique opportunities in creating indirect light, reducing power bills or both. One of the leading edge concepts is modern fluorescent lighting.
One of the reasons for those options is that more effort is being put into lighting options based on both psychology and energy efficiency. More lights are being rated by the 'warmth' they bring, also more and more options in fluorescent lighting are being made available.
While most people are familiar with fluorescent lighting from hospitals or offices, where they're associated with a certain 'light based sterility', the options have widened out considerably. Modern fluorescent lights can give a warmer, more yellow light that's closer to sunlight or more similar to what an incandescent bulb gives off.
They have also been found to be more power efficient while dropping in price. Even though they can cost more than the incandescent bulb, they can also last much longer and the possible reduced electricity costs from using them could help make up the difference over time.
There are other options for low cost lighting other than fluorescent bulbs. For example, making light emitting diodes (LED's) as interior lighting has been an ongoing challenge. LED's are great for directional light, and can be about three times as power efficient as fluorescents. Recent advances in technology have also made them available to the regular public.
Other ways to help with your lighting design include correction for some of the possible issues with fluorescent lights and coloring the ceiling or walls a light, but neutral color. For example, an off-cream or off-white can make the room appear lighter. Using mirrors strategically can also make a room feel larger, psychologically.
Regardless of how you go into your lighting design, there are plenty of lighting options available. Next time you are redoing a room or area, consider your lighting options. They can greatly enhance the pleasantness of living in that space.
