Home Elevator Installation Is Best Left To A Professional

Despite the current economic downturn, upscale homes are still being built or renovated

, often with the DIY help of friends and family. However, while projects like painting and simple carpentry are usually easily handled, major renovations such as a home elevator installation should be left to professionals. With so many variables to consider, adding an elevator to a residence requires training and expertise and should almost never be undertaken by an amateur, no matter how handy they might be. Because elevators are primarily used for transporting people from one level to another, remember that improper installation could create a safety risk for your friends and family.

Installers must be thoroughly familiar with the various types of home elevators, such as those that fit into closets and are equipped with standard doors and cars. These are designed to carry several people at a time and can be decorated simply or fitted with mirrors, wood paneling and plush accessories. They can also be made wheelchair accessible, which might not be a current necessity, but should be seriously considered for possible future use.

A more modern vacuum lift elevator has been introduced. When a home layout does not lend itself to the in-closet design, or if you prefer the more futuristic look, the vacuum lift might be a preferable solution. This type of elevator can be less expensive since it works on the same principle as the tubes used by banks and similar businesses to transport money and other small items from place to place. Another advantage is that it does not require a pit, machine room or shaft, and is completely self-contained. It can be attached within an existing building as long as there is open space between floors for it to travel. Generally constructed of clear acrylic panels, this lift fits especially well in a modern residence.

One of the most traditional residential elevators is the stair lift - the commonly seen chair attached to rails to transport those unable to climb stairs. Installation of even this relatively simple appliance, however, should not be attempted by anyone but a professional, since even a slight error can result in serious injury to the passenger.

There are several other methods of lifting and lowering people and objects from one level of a home to another. These included the dumbwaiter, used to raise heavy objects between levels. Manually operated until the 1900s, they were eventually electricity-powered and are the most common and least expensive of elevating devices. Dumbwaiters are not designed to transport people and are most often integrated into a home during construction, but they can also be a very useful addition to any multilevel structure.

Even a simple platform lift built for wheelchairs should be constructed by a professional. In other words, regardless of anyone's skills as a handyman, adding a home elevator of any type should be left to the experts.
