Home Emergency Cover – Don't Blow Your Top!

Home Emergency Cover Don't Blow Your Top!

No, we are not talking about an anger management course although this could quite easily become part of modern home emergency cover taking into account the experiences of call centre staff at some of the largest home emergency insurance companies! Stories of long silences or prolonged harangues against the unfairness of unforeseen catastrophes befalling innocent people!

One of the things that I did notice in my years as an insurance underwriter was the number of unusual incidents that occurred in homes. In fact, I think there have been books written specifically about some of the more weird and wonderful events that have taken place and arisen as an insurance claim.

I was in response to such events that modern types of specific insurance has sprung up in recent years and it is a foolish person who ignores the possibilities of the same things happening to them.

There are many different variations of home emergency cover and they need careful consideration before deciding which is most appropriate for you. Whenever considering any type of purchase, we all subconsciously work out the likelihood of the insured event happening to us. Whilst this is a sensible and normal way to deal with things, it does not always give you the protection you need.

By way of an example, let me tell you about a friend of mine who had recently bought a small cottage situated on a lovely lane near a farm. It was not exactly isolated, but there were only a few similar cottages on the lane and the nearest facilities or shops were a few miles away. This was deliberate on my friend's part, as they had recently retired and wanted to downsize their home to reflect that there were only the two of them now living in it.

The cottage had been renovated and we were invited to an informal house warming party. I did not want to appear boring, but I had to ask whether my friend had taken out any specialist insurance bearing in mind how isolated it was and whilst being diplomatic, reminding them of their advancing years! Evidently, they had recently been checking out on the internet, the latest types of home emergency cover that were available for a property of that type and had taken out a very comprehensive policy. It was also an expensive policy covering all sorts of obscure events. Because of my insurance background, they asked whether I thought that they had done the right thing. I checked the document and I have to admit to being very impressed with the degree of cover they had taken, albeit expensive.

Imagine then, when a few weeks later, after a particularly vicious storm, we got a call from them telling us that they had lost some of their roof! How on earth could that happen? Evidently, the cottage was tiled with the original slates; these are very large compared to modern roof tiles and are easily picked up by strong winds, especially if they have become slightly loose. Luckily for them, their home emergency cover provided for a roofing company to be called out straight away and set up protective sheeting to cover the roof until it could be repaired. The most impressive thing was that my volatile friend had kept his head in the emergency and just remembered to call the insurance company!
