Home Eye Test: The Patients Perspective

An 84 year old lady living in a bungalow in Norfolk recently had a home eye test

and recounted her experience for the benefit of other people in a similar situation who are debating about whether to invite an optician into their home. Having not had her eyes tested for over 2 years she felt that her vision had changed, becoming blurred and misty especially in her right eye. Her health made it very difficult for her to travel to an optician in the high street, and she rarely ventured outside her bungalow these days due to her suffering from osteo arthritis.

She had heard conflicting reports from her friends regarding the level of service to be expected from this type of domiciliary service and so was somewhat apprehensive beforehand. A little research showed there to be several businesses offering this service in her area: Healthcall, Outside Clinic and Homevisit Optical to name a few and following some more investigation she decided to make an appointment with the optometrist from Homevisit Optical as they are a family owned business and the staff on the phone were very friendly and helpful.

The appointment was booked for the Thursday of the following week. The optometrist duly arrived on time (she was give a one hour slot) and proceeded to make the lady feel comfortable with relaxed conversation while his optical assistant busied herself setting up a few items of equipment in preparation for the eye examination. She also took the readings off her old pair of glasses.

The eye test at home was really quite similar to any other eye test. First there were a few preliminary tests with bright lights and checking eye movements etc. Then he put that funny opticians frame on her (known as a trial frame) and proceeded to check her vision in each eye using several different lenses, and then with both eyes together for distance and near. Next the optometrist shone a light in her eyes and took a look inside to check they were healthy (ophthalmoscopy). Finally he measured the pressure in her eyes using a small instrument that lightly flicked a probe against her eyes, which is useful in diagnosing glaucoma. The lady was suitably impressed with the eye test which she felt was thorough but pleasant.

The optometrist concluded by summarising all his results in a clear and straight forward manner. There was a very mild cataract making the right eye a little misty but he felt it wasnt ready for an operation just yet. Apart from that the eyes appeared healthy and normal but there needed to be a small change to the prescription of her bifocals in order to help make her eye sight as clear as possible.

The optical assistant then helped the lady choose her new frames from a wide selection that they had brought along with them. She was very pleased with the choice she made, opting for a more up to date style than her existing spectacles. The specs were delivered and fitted promptly within 10 working days as promised and helped improve her vision for TV and small print. Overall she would definitely recommend that other people in similar circumstances to her try arranging for a Home Eye Test.
