Home Gym Tips
Any serious fitness enthusiast has at one point or another considered investing in workout equipment for use at home
. The convenience of not having to rely on a commercial gym is an invaluable asset. However, a lot of times the cost of purchasing even a modest collection for the house can discourage most people. If youve decided to take the plunge anyway, here are some tips to make the iron youre pumping last longer.
Rubber mats are your floors best friends. Installing 3/4ths inch thick padding will help them survive any dropped weight-plates or dumbbells with a minimum of damage. The best location to use is a level cement floor. This will provide the best and most secure footing for you. Dont think that standard indoor carpeting will be enough; theyll quickly get worn down by the heavy plates. What you can do is just place the mats on top of the existing carpet to add even more cushioning.
Another good idea is to wrap rubber strips around the handles of your equipment. This simple measure has a threefold purpose. First, it improves your grip by giving you a rougher surface to hold. It also cushions the hard metal against you palms, reducing the possibility of calluses. Finally, the rubber keeps the rust-causing sweat from between your fingers from collecting on the metal handle.
If you bought your weights and bars secondhand to save money, your gear might be beat up with surface damage and corrosion. This would be an ideal time to refinish them with
protection coatings. These are cheap and readily available, and a small amount goes a long way.
Protection coatings will keep rust, salt, water and other exposure-related damage from eating away at your dumbbells and barbells. The best ones also provide basic abrasion resistance. This will keep your weights from getting banged up in your day-to-day workouts. It ensures that your equipment will continue to look as pretty as the day you first applied the chemical shield.
Buying pre-owned also runs the risk of mismatched equipment. While being differently colored wont detract from the quality of your exercises, it might bother people who prefer everything to be nice and neat.
Protection coatings can solve this problem as well. All you have to do is choose a uniform finish to use on everything. Once youre done, theyll all look like they were made for each other.
