When winter cold is upon us it can cause havoc with our home heating budget. The cost of heating our homes is so high that many people choose to keep the thermostat at a lower setting to save money. But you don't have to freeze during the cold seasons. Here are some steps you can take to keep your home warm and save money at the same time.

Take some time to make your home ready for cold weather. If necessary, put additional insulation in areas where cold likes to creep in and heat tends to escape. These areas would be attics, remember heat rises, and basements. Also, if you have any unfinished spaces in your home check on the quality of the insulation there as well. Little things like outer wall electric outlets are places where cold air can enter your home. It is surprising how cold the air feels around these outlets. You can buy foam sealers or gaskets at home improvement stores that fit inside the outlet and do a great job of keeping out the cold.

Pay attention to the windows! This is an area where most homes lose a majority of the heat. In addition, many windows let in drafts. So how do you take care of this problem without replacing the windows? There are a couple of different options. If you want an option that looks nice, you might want to try insulated window treatments. These drapes are made of a heavy material that is insulated to help keep the cold out. Or you can use one of the most common fixes which is to put plastic sheeting on the outside of all windows to keep the drafts out. If you need to, you can put the plastic on the inside of the window.

Make sure you have your furnace check out by a heating contractor. Furnaces need attention and no matter how efficient yours was when you purchased it, if you don't take care of it you will lose a lot of that efficiency. Get a furnace tune up once a year and keep the filters changed often so dust and dirt don't build up.

What are your heating choices? You don't have to rely just on your home furnace to keep your home warm. You can cut heating costs by using a wood burning stove or fireplace if your city allows wood burning. This is a great way to provide cozy warmth and a nice atmosphere at the same time. Newer gas fireplaces are very efficient and can be a great way to supplement your home heating

A space heater is a great way to heat only the space you use, rather than spending the money to heat up empty rooms. Many infrared heaters are made to look very attractive in your home and they provide ample heat for a large room. Some people have turned to these heaters as their primary source of heat. With the ability to heat a large area for only pennies a day, it is no surprise that these heaters are gaining in popularity every year.

Cold weather doesn't have to freeze your budget. Take some time to get your home ready for the cold and then let the snow fly. You will be cozy inside your home and saving money at the same time. What could be better?
